Rewiring PS/2 to USB plug

Thread Starter 
For mounting a touchpad and internaly wiring it, I'm wanting to chop off about 2' of wire.
I then thought it would be easier to have it as a USB! So I chopped the wire and wired it to a USB
USB was :
(Ground pin): Sheath
Pin 1:Red
Pin 2:White
Pin 3:Green
Pin 4:Black

and the PS/2:
Sheath
Blue
Orange
White
Green
Which I connected as:

Sheath -> Ground pin
Blue--> Pin 1
Orange--> Pin 2
White--> Pin 3
Green--> Pin 4

I got "unrecognized device"??

Any tips/ pinout conversions?

Pin 1 |KBDAT (data)
Pin 2 |not used
Pin 3 |GND
Pin 4 |VCC (+5V)
Pin 5 |KBDCLK (clock)
Pin 6 |not used



Pin 1 | +5V (Red)
Pin 2 | -Data (White)
Pin 3 | +Data (Green)
Pin 4 | GND (Black)


Just remember that wire color is not necessarily the same for each device. Go with the pinout's over wire color.

Thanks Moots, that's the exact same-same info I dredged up!

My question is: for direct comparison
USB side
Pin2 is -Data
and
Pin3 is +Data

For PS/2 side
Pin 1 is KBDAT(Data)
and
Pin 5 is KBDCLK (Clock)

Here is where I'm guessing
The KBDAT and KBDCLK pins are equivalent to the other Data pins!: ([i]+/- Data[B])
can't I just swap the two? (one way should work and the other should not)
Is that safe- or will I fry something?

I doubt you'll fry anything. However I don't know how to convert PS/2 to USB. I believe PS/2 is serial (only got two data lines anyways) so there isn't a problem there, but you might have to do something funky.

I know that there are PS/2 to USB male adapters out there, so my suggestion would be to look up one of those and see how it's wired.

I am not sure you can do PS/2 to USB without a convertor. Here are some internals of such an adapter.

According to that, the USB Data- pin goes to the PS2 Data pin and the USB Data+ pin goes to the PS2 Clock pin.

However, the pic of the adapter that DuckieHo posted has an IC in it, so it may not be that simple.
