I should clear up some of the PSU talk here. The Thermaltake TR2 430 is an HEC and is crap. KarmaKiller recommended this FSP which honestly I don't know much about. I've seen similar models do ok but if you can show me a good review that states it is the best bang for buck, I would like to read it please. Then this Thermaltake TR2 RX suggested is a low end CWT, not horrible, but not worth $65 by any stretch.

My budget suggestions are this Earthwatts 380 for $30 shipped AR and the CM Extreme Power Plus 460 for ~$39 shipped as reviewed here.

FSP
ATX-350PAF ~25A
http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=205763

Not a bad unit, that is if you only need 25amps or less.
Some consider FSP to be a Tier II psu but I have no opinion either way on it.
I should clarify, the TR2 430W performs decent up to ~300W or so. Then it craps out since it isn't a 430W psu, more like a 330W. The labeling on this psu is pretty dishonest. So it's a 330W psu that cost $40 which puts it behind the 2 I listed.

Thanks kpo for the link, I already have it bookmarked and reference it quite a bit. I have yet to find anything that's inaccurate on it. 25A is plenty for what he wants but that still doesn't speak for the quality of unit of which I have no clue and I haven't had any luck finding a proper review on it.

Ok ok, its gonna be:

4 Velociraptors in RAID0 for windows/linux/games
3 RE2 500GB in RAID5 for storage
1 old Caviar for my Hackintosh OS

I know the scorpio seems out of place.... Its actually going to be used for a mini itx system that I'm going to mount inside the same case for when I just want to surf the web or something so I don't have to hear a single fan. And believe me when I say I'm gonna need about 900GB for the system volume and about 650GB for storage. Plus of course the extra space to actually use.

Now, about the PSU....like I said earlier the load is going to be pretty small, probably going to be 5v heavy, AND its going to run 24/7. All I want is peace of mind that its not going to burn down my house in my sleep after 3 months. Know what I mean? lol. That earthwatts one has been bugging me all this time too.

What sucks (well, maybe not so much) is that I just got the chance to get one of two PSUs for free. A used Antec Truepower 2 or a new Enermax SFX. Would either one of these be reliable enough to stick in my closet for at least 3 years or is it worth buying a different PSU?

Antec TP 2.0 is a solid no. Very cheap caps (known for early death especially at higher temps) + constant use + higher temps sitting in a closet = bad idea. I honestly don't know about the Enermax. I've never been impressed by their budget stuff, I can try to find a review. I know that it doesn't have enough connectors so you will need some splitters which doesn't make me all that happy.

edit: Wait, you linked a Trio. Is it a 2.0 or a Trio? It makes a BIG difference.

Hold up, you want to trust $1500+ worth of hard drives (and all the data on them) to the cheapest possible psu you can find?! You need to get your priorities straight. PSUs can fail in spectacular ways and RAID is useless when when your HDs are simultaneously fried.

HELL NO lol!!! The 8 hard drives are going on a GOOD one, most likely a corsair 1000W. This cheap PSU will power a P3-850MHz CPU+motherboard+ram+CF card, thats it.

And yeah I linked to the wrong psu by accident. Its a TPII-430.

Ooooooooooh, sorry bout that . I'm still not sure which of the free psus to get. Is it like a friend that is offering the psu? If the TP 2 is out of warranty, it should be by now, pop it open and look at the caps. If any are bulging or leaking, stay away from it. The Enermax should be fine for some lowly pIII even if it isn't all that great, if the Antec is a no go. And hey if the PSU does go boom and takes out some parts, it's only a pIII. I'm sure there are plenty of 'em just lying around taking up space waiting to be given away (that's how I got my pIII system).

Yeah hes a good friend and I already popped it open, none of the caps are bulging at all. And I'm honestly more worried about the stuff IN my closet than the computer itself lol. Its pretty cramped in there. I just dont wanna pick up a PSU that is gonna die from the few degrees of extra heat in there, nor should it run hot enough to generate any significant amount of it either. If that TP2 is sensitive then forget it Just gotta find out about the enermax now. If that one sucks too I'll just stick with buying a new one.
