Build Duckie a Better Server - Page 2

I don't think they get much more stripped down then the ECS I linked earlier. I saw you post in the Atom combo thread earlier. That would be great for you, except it only had 2 sata ports. You could pair a cheapo $10 2-port raid controller with it and just not use raid, that's what I did with my pIII backup server.

be careful of those super cheap SATA/RAID controllers and drivers... (chipset-wise)

I don't need RAID since I am using WHS. I forgot to add that I need a mATX motherboard to fit in my SUGO.

FearMeansControl, I have an Intel discrete NIC as well.
Once again...

Then I'd say that I'm actually very happy with the Intel board... has 1394 and an eSATA port/bracket (we've got an external that gets backed up and put in a safe deposit box once a week), a nice feature set for those of us not concerned with overclocking

I agree. I have a customer who insisted on using one of the cheap sata raid cards (not sure why since he bought a SuperMicro Mobo with an integrated sas/sata controller that does raid), and it works fine mostly, until he tries to move around large amounts of data, then he keeps getting a BSOD with a memory parity error.(there is nothing wrong with the memory or mobo...)

Ahhhh... the 780G is manufactured on a 55nm process. This is why it uses so little power while providing better performance.
Once again...

I would never trust them with raid but mine works just fine as extra sata ports. I guess I just got lucky. Not that the pIII is all that important anyways to me.

Components:
Cost: $106.98 (there is an $10 cheaper open box mobo too )

740G chipset is new and seems like a stripdown version of 780G one.

Good find, I missed those. Looks a like 55nm revision to the 690G so no pci-e 2.0, UVD or DX10. Looks like a good match for you Duckie.

edit- Guess not, still 80 nm.
