I went Q9450 over Q6600. Easiest 3.9GHz clock ever. Tonight I'll be pushing for the 4+ range. CPU-Z screenies coming when I get home from work.

I think Q9450 is better than Q6600, but it's more expensive.

The Q9450 is breaking the 3.6GHz barrier that almost all Q6600's have. I've seen many people claiming they reached 3.7-3.9GHz on it, something you don't typically see with the Q6600. Yes it has a lower multiplier, but the CPU is on average capable of overclocking beyond the speeds of the Q6600 as long as you put it in a good motherboard capable of the higher FSB and put a nice aftermarket CPU cooler on it. You can't say a Q9450 overclocks worse than a Q6600 if the limiting factor when overclocking the Q9450 is the motherboard.

It's a valid point to make, that in addition to spending more money on the Q9450, you'll need a motherboard that can hit a FSB of 450 - 500MHz in order to see benefits over the Q6600, which might cost you some money. But this doesn't mean the Q9450 will not overclock higher than the Q6600, just means you have to spend even more money to make it do this.

8.5 multiplier for the Q9450 I thought. Whoops!

From what I've seen, those same people are using more than 1.4V to reach those levels on the Q9450, which I wouldn't touch with a 10-foot pole.

to those that I have seen hit 3.6 or above are only using 1.33-1.34 at highest so far.
myself only needs 1.256 as read by cpuz to be stable in windows at 3.64ghz.

You have to bear in mind that higher overclocks on a 45nm Quad require a motherboard with near godly FSB capabilities. The higher multipliers of the cheaper 65nm Quads make achieveing high overclocks much easier. Although this itself depends on the chipset.

When you're running on a cheap motherboard with low FSB capabilities, or even on certain nForce chipset motherboards that don't play nicely with Quads at high FSB's.
You would probably be fine with a 6700 since all the good chips are going to that model. Then you dont need as expensive of a motherboard. My quad will do 3.6Ghz at 1.46v, 3.4Ghz at 1.408v and 3.2Ghz at 1.352. I fold 24/7 at 3.2Ghz to keep the heat down in my room.
