Change GPU from 1650 to 1550

Thread Starter
As you all know Im having prob with my GPU in this thread: http://www.overclock.net/ati/331281-...ob-my-gpu.html

Im been using X1650 256MB for 15 months now and I think it died out for 24/7 of using with stock heatsinkfan. Someone in driverheaven forums who work in ATI said overheating caused corruption and defected the gpu. Well the technician here bought and install X1550 Pro 512MB gpu, If I were to choose, I would buy Nvidia 8400 or HD2600. Is this X1550 Pro 512MB PCIex16 better than the old X1650 PCI 256MB? Which one is better and what is the difference between a 256MB than the 512MB except for the higher memory ofcourse and Pro with the non pro.

they're both 128bit buses (though the x1550 COULD be 64bit) so a 512MB x1550 or x1650 performs on par w/ their respective 256MB versions... that said, the 256MB x1650 would win over the 512MB x1550 by a decent bit simply because it's a better core (higher clock/better architecture)....

The X1550 is basically a slightly overclocked X1300 card on an 80nm instead of 90nm die. Think about it that way, and the X1550 doesn't sound nearly as good as the X1650, eh?

The X1550 isn't even close to the X1650PRO.
If anything, it's closer to an X1300

It has nearly half the memory bandwidth, much lower fillrate and shader ops and not to mention the X1550 only uses DDR2 which is vastly inferior to GDDR3

Here's a comparison if you are interested

DDR3 > DDR2 I made the mistake of that a long time ago when I bought my x1650. I though,, "well 512 is better than 256" but really 512 of DDR2 < 256 of DDR3.
