I have a 650 watt power supply and a 22 inch monitor, 900 watts should be enough power correct?

Depends on a few things like how long you want the battery to last in a power failure. It also goes by the power draw of your components not the size of your PSU.Here is a calculator to figure size.

Just found out recently that the current standard for conversion efficency is at about 80% right now, so if your going to be at peak load your intake will be around 815 watts for the PSU alone. Don't forget your speakers, printer, and any other ecesories that you will plug in.

Yea also you only need the basics on the battery and the rest on just the voltage protection. Most also have automatic shut down software if you want to install it.

The calculator above suggests that I get a 800va 540 watt UPS, I don't think the wattage matters at all since the wattage is what powers the UPS not the other components. The voltage from the wall should just pass through the ups into the desired components.

You only need more than 750 watts if you're going to be using more than two graphics cards.

Err what about when the power supply fails? I never bought a UPS, might consider doing so, and we have similer requirements so I am quite interested in this.

Just depends on what your needs are.You want AVR (automatic voltage regulation) which protects against voltage spikes and brown out conditions.Low voltage can do damage too. Then the # of outlets you need, they will have outlets with battery backup and ones without but they all have AVR.The bigger the unit the more outlets. Then how long you want the battery to last when it's on backup.
