Well, vmodding is only for those who don't mind damaging their cards. Which I guess you don't really want to do. Start by overclocking. You will need -
Lots off free time
EVGA Precicion (You will have to sign up)
ATITool (Works on nVidia too)

First open up evga precision. There are 3 sliders. One is core, one is shaders, one is memory. First click the Unlink clocks button. First start on the core. Open up ATITool and click 'Scan for artifacts'. A window with a pink fuzzy thing will open. Then in EVGA precision slowly move the core slider up. STOP when you see any small yellow dots (These are known as artifacts). Record the hightest point you got to. Once you see any dots move the core slider back down 20mhz or so. Next do the same with shaders and memory. You may have to back the core down a bit to get a stable overclock on all three. Finally to check it is completely stable run the ATITool artifact scanner for at least 30 minutes, check carefully to make sure there are NO yellow dots or errors displayed at the bottom.

As posted above the EVGA precision is a good tool for OC'n your cards and setting fanspeed..
Its very noob friendly IMO, very simple to use. I suggest upping your core by intervals of 10 (or so) and testing for a good 10-20 min (repeat for memory clock after you find max stable core)

ATI tool I only use for testing... just open it up and "Scan For Artifacts" between each increase.
For true testing on your OC I suggest running a good game for a while.

The only downside I have with the evga tool is no profile settings...
When I play NFS pro street it locks up when my cards are OC'd, dont know why cause its the only game that does it.

Rivatuner will allow you to set profiles so if you have an issue like this you can just load a diff profile for certain games..
If you go to GURU 3D you will find some good OC guides for it and profile settings...

Hope this helps...
