Im pretty sure. ATi uses a modified version of DVI. Just use the adapter they include with the card.
Yep check here http://ati.amd.com/products/radeonhd...0xt/specs.html
As long as it is a 2XX0 or 3XX0
* Two Dual-Link DVI-I connectors for high-resolution digital displays
* ATI Radeon™ DVI-I to HDMI2 with 5.1 audio (adapter)
* HDTV Component (YPrPb) output (adapter)
* VGA mode support on DVI-I outputs (adapter)
* Drive two displays simultaneously with independent resolutions and refresh rates
* TV output requires HDMI, component, S-video or composite cable (not included)

No, DVI only carries video not sound, so an adapter wont change that..although ive seen some HD3850s i think its the powercolour one which had a HDMI connection on the actual card which carried audio aswell as video, i really wanna get that one for my htpc, saves having an extra wire going to the tv.

Wow - I would've just assumed that it doesn't support sound like the rest of the posters since it's DVI. I wonder what pins they use to carry sound. Maybe the otherwise useless analog pins?

So if I get the HD 2900 XT (that or the 2600, cant remember) that has the HDMI built in on teh card. The card would act as a video card and a sound card?

Edit* Would it be better to have a dedicated graphics and use onboard sound or something?

My 3870 carries sound thro the DVI to HDMI converter.

The sound thro the HDMI is only if you want sound through your tv/reciever for your tv. It's useless for me since I use my Z-5500 speakers, so onboard is best for me.

If you have a 2XXX or 3XXX with a DVI to HDMI adapter- The hdmi cable will carry 2 channel stereo sound or 5.1 DTS with some messing about.

If you just use a DVI cable then you won't get sound.

1. Yes

2. Depends on your config, if your hdtv/monitor has no input for sound only you'll need the sound carried on the HDMI cable. If however your tv has a separate sound input or you want to use an amplifier, go with separate dedicated sound & gfx.

....and the 4870 is rumoured to have 7.1 PCM pass through I'll be definitely picking one up for the htpc if that turns out to be true.
