Whyifide, you haven't quite given us enough info to help with this problem. Are you using cable, DSL, FiOS, dial-up, or another type of internet? You say you dad doesn't have problems getting online. Are you plugging one computer direclty into the modem\\phone and trying to get online, then the other, or are you attempting to use a router to share your internet.
The most common reason for "invalid IP address" is when 2 users are trying to get online using an unshared source. If you have cable internet and are trying to use a switch to share internet between 2 PC's, you would get this error. in order to share internet service you must use a single PC\\server to establish the connection and then share it with other stations. If you're not using a router then you need to look into setting up ICS (internet connection sharing) on the PC in the home that is most often on, and that should help.
