Help with 8800GT OC please

Thread Starter
O.K. I'm trying to oc my 8800gt using rivatuner, checking for artifacts with 3dmark06 and atitools artifact checker.

Stock settings for card per rivatuner hardware monitor
640/1620/950

But, in the rivatuner system tweaks (where you actually make the changes) it says 633/1600/950, so I'm not sure which to go by. I have noticed it's not a one for one change between the two, I have to make a change of 2 to 6 in the system tweaks before a change shows in HW monitor. So I'll be giving both readings.

So far I have reached
734/1647/987 in system tweaks
734/1620/972 in HW manager.

I'm on stock cooler on the GPU.. my temps are 43c idle - 67c load in 3dmark. These temps have remained the same between stock and OC, they haven't gone up at all.

the Memory and shader are as high as they can go before I hit artifacts in ati tools. I still haven't hit any artifacts on the core yet, but am not sure if I should keep pushing it. I'm almost 100mhz over stock. I can't raise the shader at all (I have core and shader unlinked). As soon as I go the next notch up which is 1648 in system tweeks and therfore bumps it to 1674 in HW manager, I start getting artifacts in ati tools.

My questions are:

1. Should I keep going with the core
2. why can't I touch the shader without artifacts, I've looked at others with the same core and they are hitting 1800ish, stock cooling.
3. How much of change should I expect in 3dmark.. stock settings I got 10482. With the above OC it only went to 10570ish. Does that seem right?
4. Shouldn't my temps be going up as I overclock.
5. What exactly does the shader do, this is my first card where I've seen it.

Thanks in advance for any answers and advice

O.K. I answered number 1 myself. I ran ati tools for artifacts for a longer period of time and started getting some. I backed off the core to 708 and ati tools ran without errors for over an hr. So current settings are:

708/1600/978 in the tweak tool
709/1620/972 in HW manager.

tonight I'm going to try upping the shader again and see what happens.

Any advice on my other questions?

Nobody has any input on this? I still can't up my shader at all, I don't understand why, I see all kinds of OC's of the 8800GT with the core and mem close to or higher than what I'm at AND the shader at least 1800.

"unlink" core and shader clocks.

Set your fan speeds to 75-80%

Begin upping the core clock by intervals of 10-15 and run ATI Tool "Scan For Artifacts" for a good 30min.

If no artifacts, repeat process til you see artifacts. Then back off the OC about 20.

Then repeat process for both the shader and memory clocks til you find max stable for each one...

Its more of a weekend project for me... start Sat morn, and usually done by 12-2pm...

Good Luck

And that Guru3D site has some great guides on overclocking..

well all cards dont o/c the same, your core will o/c higher than memory will, just go as stated little by little and check, imo

I got mine running 700/1800/2000, 44C idle doesn't go over 67C under load
It seems to be stable after playing 2hours of COD 4.
Oh yeah, I uses EVGA's new Overclocking tool, I seem to like it better that ATI tool besides it does not have an artifact scanner

Heres the program

Just a cool pic I took of the card a while back

Yea, I've tried the EVGA tool also. Same results, I can get my core/mem to 707/972, close to what alot of other people are getting, but shader is defaulted at 1620 and thats as high as I can go. If I raise it above 1650 (unlinked) on the slider which then bumps it from 1620 to 1674 actual in the HW manager. I get artifacts. This happens even if I back my core/mem back to the default of 640/950. So not sure what is is, something with my cards shader I guess. My temps are good, I don't get over 65c under load.

Just the card then... Just like cpu's they dont all perform the same, even with the same manufacturer..

My orig PNY was maxed at 650/1650/1000. I burned it up trying to up the pcie freq in bios and rma'd it.

The two PNY's Im running now will do 730/1750/1000 without artifacting, and run benchies, but will crash in games.

700/1700/1000 is OK on everything, ATI Tool, hours of gameplay, etc....

I usually run them a tad slower for conservation purposes. 675/1700/975, just cause in SLI mode I dont need it anyway
