[Bittech] Starcraft 2's system specs leaked?

These are by no means official just yet, but after a visit to Blizzard's offices the Spanish gaming magazine Micromania has had a look under the hood of Starcraft 2 and got some outlines of what the system requirements will be.

While Blizzard is apparently yet to comment on the suggested requirements, they seem reasonable to us and are in line with current expectations for the upcoming strategy juggernaut. Check out the minimum and recommended specs below.

Minumum Requirements
GFX: GeForce 7/8 Series or Radeon 1000/2000 with 256 MB RAM
CPU: Pentium 4
RAM: 1 GB
Internet: ADSL 1 Mbit

Recommended Requirements
GFX: GeForce 8000 or Radeon 2000 series with 512 MB RAM
CPU: Core 2 Duo or Athlon X2.
RAM: 2 GB
Internet: ADSL 3 Mbit

Starcraft 2 hasn't gone gold quite yet, so you should be prepared for these figures to change somewhat as the developer finalises the requirements for the game, but as it is at the moment this is the best anyone has to go on.

Hmmm... that's recommended? And supposedly comparable to an 8000 series NVIDIA? I don't think so.

I vote faked on this one.

I never really understood "minimum system requirements" in a hardware aspect...

They should just say something along the lines of:

Minimum--

SSE2
Shader model 2.0
DX8

Recommended--

SSE3/SSE4 support
shader model 4.0 support
DX10 support

Then let the people figure out what hardware it supports... Obviously when they say 8000 nvidia cards, that could mean anything from a 8400GS to a 8800GTX. quite the huge gap, but same tech support mentioned above...

And take the general common sense fact that the more money you spend on your hardware, the better games will run. Considering you know how to pick out hardware...

They could even go as far as saying something like:

If your computer is less than 4 years old, and supports DX9 you shouldn't have any issues playing the game at mid range settings...

If you have a new PC with DX10 support, from within the last 6 months you should be able to run the game at almost max settings...

So many ways to explain it... they pick the most retarded way of letting people know what will work and what wont...

---

The game looks exciting!! i bet the moment it goes gold, theres going to be some torrent leak via Koren trackers...

wow JoBlo69, you're asking a lot from the common people. even I don't know what SSE2 is. most people don't even know they have DX10.

Yeah, and then there's the 'optimum requirements' sometimes quoted along with these.. Which consist of a '3GHz Core 2 Duo or Athlon X2', so no quad, no specifics on the Athlon which can somehow match a 3GHz C2D, and then there's the 'Geforce 9 series card' which apparently is a generation better than the 8 series even though we all know every 9 card is a rebadged 8 series card.. Unless they seem to think one would need a 9800GX2 for an 'optimum experience'.

It's utter BS.

Blizzard will never release a game with that high of a requirement relative to today's standard. There are plenty of people still with AGP and if they want to appeal to a mass crowd, their engine has to be at least as scalable as the UT3 or COD4 engine.
Not bad at all...

There are definitely ATI 2000 series cards that perform comparable to (or better than) nVidia 8000 series cards! For example, the 2900XT 512MB likely performs better than the 8800GS 384MB in most games.

But yeah, these "system spec" numbers seem to have pretty much been confirmed fake by a Blizzard employee. If you click on the appropriate links (starting at the OP's Bittech article), you get to....

VE3D:
Quote:
The unofficial StarCraft 2 website dug up the minimum specs needed to play StarCraft 2 from Spanish mag Micromania which were later to be confirmed as true by Blizzard. Overall, pretty reasonable, I'd say:

Minumum Requirements
GFX: GeForce 7/8 Series or Radeon 1000/2000 with 256 MB RAM
CPU: Pentium 4
RAM: 1 GB
Internet: ADSL 1 Mbit

Recommended Requirements
GFX: GeForce 8000 or Radeon 2000 series with 512 MB RAM
CPU: Core 2 Duo or Athlon X2.
RAM: 2 GB
Internet: ADSL 3 Mbit

Update: - Blizzard sends word that these specs are not confirmed. Just so you know!
Then the link from the quoted post above (from IncGamers):
Quote:
The Spanish magazine Micromania has had the privilige to visit the Blizzard offices and apart from a preview also managed to digg up the current (*unofficial until verified by Blizzard) system requirements for the game:
[Same figures]
These specifications not as light as one might expect from Blizzard but do remember that this is just for the Alpha. Are these to high or a Blizzard product or are they up to par with other games?

* Xordiah contacted us to clarify that the ONLY thing Blizzard given out or shown ANYONE is that the game will require pixel shader 2.0.
Then "Xordiah's" description link in the above quoted post (also on IncGamers).

Quote:
Xordiah is the handle of the Blizzard Entertainment employee Stefanie Gwinner [. . .] she is the community spokesperson for StarCraft II for the European RTS community, but she is also involved with StarCraft and WarCraft III.
So in light of this, I think it's safe to say the system specs in question are probably fakes.
