If you are going from nForce 4 to nForce 5/6/7/8/9, you generally don't need to reinstall anything. Why do the extra hours of work when it is unnecessary.

I don't even see why you would have to do a windows repair. I have taken a bootable hard drive among a few different computers and it has worked.

aren't the chipset drivers just like any other drivers out there? I've always thought the chipset drivers are just like any other driver.

It's always a good idea to reformat to start off fresh and to insure there wont be stupid little problems. You dont have to but it is recommended.

Not always... there is some registry values that may affect the OS.

I have a feeling I'm gonna have problems cuz I'm going Intel to Asus. Specifically, D945PVS to the Asus P5B here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131030

Turns out I didn't have to reinstall. Neither did I have to reinstall Ubuntu. Ubuntu was painless...I just had to reinstall grub and fix the root drive references in menu.lst. In XP, it booted up into a low resolution, and started asking for drivers. I was afraid since my cd drive (e:\\) wasn't showing up in My Computer, and the drivers for the Asus board were on CD. However, when I popped in the CD and it started trying to find the drivers, it somehow saw the e:\\ drive anyway and started installing drivers for the board.

Then, everything was working fine! Most of my benchmarks doubled (or more) in score after going from a 3.4 GHz Pentium D to a Core 2 Duo e7200 @ 2.52 GHz w/o overclocking! I am excited to see what it can do at 3.16 GHz...

Congrats, in the future, google "sysprep" for changing the mobo without a reinstall.
