Is there any room left to upgrade?

Hey there,

I've just joined OCN, and I was hoping someone (or preferably a bunch of someones ) could take the time to check out my sig rig and see if there's anything else they think I can do to squeeze a little more out of it until I build a new one this time next year.

I don't care at all about the cost of individual components and I'm open to replacing anything except the case and motherboard.

I know I could see massive gains with a new mobo / dual core etc, but this pc has been a labour of love for over 4 years now, and I refuse to abandon it just yet.

This week I've added the new Saitek Cyborg Keyboard & Mouse which I'm liking very much, and a Sapphire Radeon HD 3850 512MB AGP.

At the moment I run XP Pro 99% of the time, however I have a WD 74GB Raptor with Vista Ultimate inside the case. It is entirely unplugged most of the time, but I wanted to become accustomed to Vista and I'm slowly warming to it.

I used to run XP Pro on the Raptor until I converted my CD collection to MP3 and needed more space.

Any and all comments on my build welcomed,

Thanks for your time.

i was goin to suggest a raptor but i can see you hav one so i would suggest another one in raid. no matter what you upgrade your hard drive is always goin to be a bottle neck. the beauty of getting another raptor is when you do build a new rig you can take them over. tbh i`d save the money and start buying parts for your new rig now. not much sence in spending any more cash on this rig and you my just bring your new rig forward a couple of month

and with vista? i`d move over full time dood. i put a dual boot of vista ultimate with xp booted up with vista and i havent used xp since.
there is a lot of scaremongering goin on about vista but i can honestly say i`ve had no problems (though i dont have a pci sound card)
it takes a bit of getting used to finding things again but in all its pretty intuitive to use. how long have we had to get used to xp? you wont look back dood i can promise

A new sound card and power supply wouldn't be a bad investment, at least as long as you have an idea of what kind of setup you'll be building in the future. A new mouse and keyboard wouldn't be a bad way to go if you're itching for an upgrade either.

Thanks for the input guys -

I guess for now I'll shove all my mp3s/photos on the external HD, pick up another 74GB raptor, configure raid 0 and make the step to use Vista full time.

I was planning on using a pair of the new VelociRaptor from WD in my new rig:

http://www.westerndigital.com/en/pro...sp?DriveID=459 mmm yes please~

I'm very curious to see how performance and frame rates in CoD4 and DoW: Soulstorm compare on Vista with DX10.1 and I'll also get the chance to run 3DMark Vantage - no doubt it'll turn into a seconds-per-frame affair with my CPU hehe.

EDIT: Sorry forgot to add, RayvinAzn: I've been under the impression the Audigy 2 does a fairly decent job, do you think I'd see/hear a noticable difference with an X-Fi series?

The X-Fi does not offer much improvement in sound quality over the Audigy 2, but it does add a lot of nice gaming effects in games that support EAX. Creative isn't playing nice with Vista right now however, so I'd probably shy away from their cards and either go the emulation route with the ASUS Xonar DX or go the expensive route with the Auzentech X-Fi Prelude.

Keep that nice old machine. I have one similar that my wife uses. I will be building a new one soon but will never dump the old 478's
