i had this same problem. unfortunately, xp overrides vista bootloader so i had to reinstall vista so that xp would show up on vista bootloader.

try GRUB or other bootloader programs. i didnt have time so i just reinstalled and moved my user folder from WINDOWS.OLD to regular windows.

i know, its a pain in the arse.

The best way to do this is to install xp first then vista. When this is done its gives the option to boot from either.
You can do this the other way round but its a bit more tricky, go here to see how http://www.tweakvista.com/article39206.aspx.

I do not know if you can do this without reinstalling either of the operating systems, hope this helps.

If you HAVE to do it with your existing setup (can't reformat), plug the Vista CD in and then go into the "Repair boot manager" tool. Should fix it right up to boot Vista, then add your XP partition manually after that (if it doesn't do it already).

Use the repair function with the Vista disc. There is an option to repair the boot loader from what I remember.
