Switched from AMD and kinda dissapointed

Thread Starter
Went out last night and bought a EVGA 780i board and an E8400.

My rig is

EVGA 780i
E8400
2gb OCZ pc-6400
XFX 8800GTS Alpha Dog

Only thing I switched was my motherboard and processor.

I had an EVGA 590 and an Athlon 64 x2 3800

I honestly can say that I noticed almost no difference in speed. I dunno if Im just expecting too much, but everyone I talked to and everything I read said to buy this processor.

And honestly it loaded up my battlefield 2142 maybe 2 seconds faster. UT3 same thing. And crysis changed to say I could run at high instead of medium(but everyone says that game is coded so poorly its not a good benchmark)

Was I just expecting too much? Or what? I thought coming from a 1.9ghz proc with a 512k L2 cache this increase would be huge.

Or maybe not, I dunno. But this upgrade was definately not worth the almost 500 I spent on it.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions..... Id like to keep it if I can see a real difference

From a 7300 to an 8800 I think you would be seeing an improvement. Anyway the benefit of the e8400 is its ability to overclock so well on stock volts. So crank that up...then it will beat that 3800. I noticed the difference from an 3800 x2 to an e2180, so you certainly should.

My E2160 was a downgrade from my X2 BE-2350 but this E7200 now that it's overclocked is a nice upgrade.

I havent gone intel yet, but I was planning to. I was thinking the same thing, that my cpu was bottlenecking my setup, but perhaps I was mistaken. I will be paying close attention to this thread.

Did you reinstall Windows? If not, you're probably missing out on a lot of the functionality of your system.

Well I have had the 8800gts for a couple of weeks and definately noticed that upgrade.

Im honestly thinking about just taking the mobo and proc back and getting a x2 6000 or something for less than half the price. I dunno

I don't think your cpu is that much of a bottleneck. An X2 3600+ would probably be a bottlneck though. I made the switch because I had to (IDE channel died on my old AM2 board) For the cost of a decent AM2 board I got Processor, mobo and CPU off of a member on here. The best bit of the intels is that they overclock so far compared to AMD, but their difference at stock not very noticable.

EDIT: Yeah...did you reinstall. You must otherwise it runs like :turd: - I tried once for a laugh.
