Suggestions for new build?

Thread Starter
This is a build for a friend of mine, he's looking at getting the system in the next month or so. System will be overclocked, thinking to maybe 3.2-3.4ghz if possible. Not sure on ram, would there be any issue with a 1333Mhz FSB cpu, using DDR2-800 ram?

Looking to keep price around $2000 or so. Any suggestions/replacements for parts would be appreciated.

My picks (all Newegg):
  • Thermaltake Armor+MX VH8000BWS Black Aluminum / Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case $134.99
  • EVGA 123-YW-E175-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 750i FTW SLI ATX Intel Motherboard $189.99
  • 2X XFX PVT88GYDF4 GeForce 8800GTS (G92) 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card $479.98
  • CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply $129.99
  • Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80570E8400 $194.99
  • G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1000 (PC2 8000) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-8000CL5D-4GBPQ $84.99
  • Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive $99.99
  • SAMSUNG 22X DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-S223F $28.99
  • Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer 7.1 Channels PCI Interface Sound Card $90.99
  • OCZ OCZTVEND2 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler $49.99
Subtotal: $1,484.89

For gaming, right now a dual core will outperform a quad core CPU. If you insist on quad, the Q6700 is your best pick. However, with the E8400, I am able to fit SLI-ed 8800GTS 512MB GPUs in your budget, which will vastly outperform a single 9800GTX (if you want to save, get a single 8800GTS 512MB, since the 9800GTX is simply not worth its money... only about 5% gain over a SINGLE 8800GTS 512MB.)

Thanks for the suggestions, i'll update the psu, ram and graphics card. I guess i didnt really read much to know the 9800 is just an oc'ed 8800. He does want a quad core though, i'm wondering why you guys suggest the 65nm Q6700 over the 45nm Q9300 or Q9450?

Higher overclocking potential. The Q9300 has a multi of x7.5, while the Q9450 has a multi of x8. The Q6700, on the other hand, has a multi of x10, making your overclocking life a bit easier.
