This is my 4th major system build, behind my own and a buddies (spider platforms), and my mother-in-law(an x2 5000+ dual core box)

System Building forever!!

anyway...

onto the specs

My dad is a former software developer who has been out of the game for the last 13 or 14 years. He's got some ideas now that he's retired and wants a development PC that will last 5 - 8 years.

CPU: C2Q q9300 2.5GHz 6MB cache
MOBO: ASUS p5E
RAM: Patriot PC2-8500 8GB (4 x 2GB)
GFX: HD 3850 (HDMI support being the key here, dev pc not gaming)
HDD: 2 x 500GB Hitachi T7K500 SATA II
DVD: Samsung SH-S203B 20X
INPUT: Logitech Cordless Desktop MX 5000 Laser, Keyspan RF remote
CASE: ANTEC Sonata III
PSU: Earthwatts 500W
DISP: BenQ FP222W 22"
OS: Vista Home Premium x64

$1900 for all those parts

Now blast me apart! srsly though I'd like to build the best dev comp I can, so comments welcome.

PSU is horrible
At least get a Corsair 750TX.
And get a better GPU too, you can do better with a 1.9k budget.
Also, Hitachi isn't a great brand, many people have had bad experiences with HD failures.
Get a Seagate, WD, or Samsung F1 drive off of newegg. My advice is to get two of those 99.99 WD 640GB drives in RAID0, and have a 750GB Seagate for backup.
Don't get the patriot, get the newegg GSkill PC8500 1000MHz 2x2GB kit for 84.99 each, get two of them if you want 8GB.

Wow, I can't find that manufacturer on either my local shop http://memoryexpress.com, or the national one http://tigerdirect.ca , and bloody newegg STILL doesn't ship to Canada.

Seems pretty good. When you say, ASUS P5E, which P5E are you talking about? There are a bunch of P5Es on the market.

Edit: Nvm, I found it

y not a 9600gt? - you can get a dvi to hdmi adapter with the xfx version, is that enuf?
also, if u can manage another $50, buy a decent cpu cooler and oc the cpu to 3.4

btw - i managed to put together this machine for $1100 and this was in this january http://people.aapt.net.au/dcpearse/Final%20Computer.xls
obviosly if you can work from that, then u shood be able make something better for only a little more

PSU horrible wattage wise brandwise or both? I figured 500w would be enough since I run my system off a corsair 550w.

HDD failure would suck, but he's already got an external backup solution.

I can't find gskill available in canada yet .....grrrr
