So, what would you do if you were me?

Thread Starter
First time posting here, and I'm not sure if my system is going to show up in my signature or not. If not I'll edit my system in.

So, this is a system I built a couple of years ago and while it was great then for everything.. these days it's getting kind of tired. I upgraded the Graphics card a while ago to the 8600GT from a 7600(it died) and will be getting another 2GB of ram in the mail (same kind I already have in there)

I'm looking for game optimization really, especially with the recent release of Age of Conan I really notice the death of smooth gameplay. I get a lot of spikes and actually think my Graphics card was overheating at one point (started seeing artifacts in game, then got a BSOD) .. I plan on working with the wires and such to help with that but..

I've really never overclocked.
I can run memtest and other programs, I'm savvy. As it stands right now I'm using a built in aBit program that overclocks for you and it seems to work but doesn't seem to really increase speeds.

On load the temp seems to go to 55C(around 45 idle or so) too, during the game that is, and my cpu fan really fires up to handle it (which I don't mind too much if it means I can play nicely)

So.. with this system setup what would you overclock to on the CPU? Should I leave the RAM alone? .. and the 8600GT? If I can get it to run a bit cooler with higher fan settings and wire management I think it'll be fine(it's also dirty at the moment), if you guys think I'd see a benefit from overclocking these things.

Thank you in advance, I just don't want to damage anything and would like to see what you guys would do if you had this setup in your hands to boost performance.

I've got good news and bad news for you.

Bad news is your system will not run AoC smoothly, OC'd or otherwise. (unless your game settings are very low - low)

Good news is that you are not missing out on much AoC is not living up to it's hype unfortunately.

If I were you I would pick up a used core2 or an exxx chip off the forums or just buy it new and overclock from there. Ditch the windows overclocking programs and overclock through the bios from now on. Those gpu's can overclock well too and you can do that through rivatuner and also set the fan speed to 70% when you are gaming.

For age of conan, id overclock the CPU and RAM (they kind of go hand in hand), and get an 8800gts 512mb. Also, get a new heatsink/fan for your CPU. Maybe a Thermalright Ultra 120.
