Please help me to find one!..

Thread Starter
Hi guys..

This is my first post in here, my english is not the best, so please be patient..
I've just ordered new MB, Ram, CPU's and GPU's as follows:

MB: Intel D5400XS

RAM: OCZ ReaperX (4x2 Gig)

CPU: 2 x Intel Xeon X5450

GPU: 2 x Inno3D GF9800GX2 (Factory OC)

My big question! : How much power will this consume at full load, and which PSU do i need to be sure it's perfect and stable ?

I'm not an expert to this, so any help is very appreciated!..

ANY comments about the system is also welcome.. i can still make changes to the choice of components.. It's still not shipped.

Thanks.

You'll need a pretty hefty PSU for that. I'd say at least 800W to be safe?

And I don't think that RAM will work. Don't you need ECC ram for the skulltrail board? Can someone else confirm?

Skulltrail needs FD-DIMMS, not standard DDR2
And i would also say 800+ Watt PSU

Thanks so far..

I allready got a NorthQ 1000W PSU, but a friend of mine where suspicious about if this is enough..

I guess this is not a Skulltrail board.. Skulltrails is, (as far as i was told) Intel factory tuned version of this board, Not std. D5400SX.. so i don't know if this has any influence to the choice of ram.. someone confirm please..

From the boards specs page:

Supports:
* Four Fully Buffered DIMM (FBDIMM) DDR2 Module sockets
* Support for FBDIMM DDR2 800MHz, 667 MHz, DIMMs

Therefore you need FD-DIMMS
The board looks like the skulltrail and supports SLI nad Crossfire so i think it is skulltrail
You will need to find some FD-DIMMs i think - nice system though - have fun with it

Salesman just entered a bad day then - the ram looked fairly expensive [the sticks he ordered], the FB-DIMMs are very expensive for what they are i think

CyberDruid is selling his Skulltrail. I think he is selling the CPUs, mobo, and RAM together though.

The NorthQ 850W review I saw showed it performed pretty well so the 1000W is hopefully similar. The problem is the 1000W only has 65A on the 12V which is low. That is closer to what we should be getting in an 800W psu. Because of that, I am skeptical it will be able to handle two quads and quad sli. I base that on estimation that the two quads need ~250W at stock and much more if you can manage to OC which isn't easy with Skulltrail. Plus figure about 450-500W for the 2 GX2 at full load. We are almost to 65A already ignoring hard drives and such. Now, the catch is that nothing you can do will load all of those components at once so technically so don't need more then the 65A you have. But on the flipside, it is better to have some breathing room for the PSU so it is stressed less and thus operates at a lower temperature and lasts longer and has better efficiency. If you can afford it, try to look for an 80A 1000W psu such as the Corsair hx1000, the Silverstone OP/DA1000, Thermaltake Toughpower 1000 and the Xigmatec HC1001.

edit- Also, if you plan on overclocking be aware your NorthQ only has 1 8-pin 12V cpu plug AFAIK and it is not recommended to overclock with only one plugged in, it's best to use a psu that has 2.

The salesman was aware of his reponsebility in this matter and gave me 4x2Gig FB-DIMMS without any further charge.

One the other hand, this is the ONLY discount i had on this 5400$ system..
I guess hardware is pretty expensive i Denmark in general..
