Any Ideas Why My Rig Won't Boot?

Thread Starter
So... my new rig has run fine up until this point (see hardware below). I added a second (older, IDE) HDD with no problems - everything booted, ran just fine, etc. I finally restarted my computer (I rarely shut down - updates and thunderstorms, basically), and now it's not booting. I get the Gigabyte splash, with all the key options listed, but no power to my keyboard or mouse, and it doesn't post any further. Any ideas? No new software, other than a Microsoft update (Silverlight update, I believe).

Try resetting CMOS since you added a new HDD, worth a shot.

Wouldn't it have had a problem when I first booted with the new HDD? 'Cause it was fine immediately following the second HDD, and only just now has problems. All drives spin up, just no power to the peripherals, for some reason (to be exact, power to all peripherals EXCEPT mouse and keyboard).

Try resetting the bios, and if that fails, take out a stick of ram, failing that: strip the system out and start it all again
Any overclocks?

CMOS cleared, can't even access BIOS pages, 'cause no keyboard - might have to scrounge up one of my old PS/2 boards. You think having all four memory slots stuffed might be affecting it? Haven't had a problem to this point, but worth a shot. No overclocks yet - built the rig less than 3 months ago, and just haven't had time to put better cooling in yet. Hate to start over, but we'll see.

The memory could affect it, if it's not getting past boot, the northbridge voltage/ram voltage could be to low and causing it to fail, try with one stick and see what happens, then if it works, manually set the northbridge/ram voltages

You will proably need a PS/2 Keyboard as when you cleared the CMOS, you would have turned off legacy USB, so the Keyboard cannot be used untill you get into windows

hope that all helps

Unplug the hard drive you added. See if thats causing you problems.

@ScottAth: Actually, that Gigabyte has Legacy USB defaulted - least, it did when I got it. I'll try it either way.

@Wire: LOL, that's the first thing I did, of course. No luck. As I said, I don't think it's the HDD, 'cause it worked just fine initially. This seems more like something has shorted, maybe... *Crosses fingers and hopes not*. Dunno what would have caused it, though.

Try another USB slot for the keyboard? I have a few USB/PS2 adapters I use for nre builds etc. Did you change/install/add anything else? Whenever this happens, I try to work backwards.

Do you possibly have different ram to try?

Just for ****s and grins, flip the psu switch off and then back on. I've sometimes had this fix booting problems.
