[Giz] Free Broadband for All in New Spectrum Auction

It looks like the FCC is taking up Congresswoman Anna Eshoo's dopey scheme to deliver internet to the masses with another spectrum auction that would require the winner to offer free broadband to half of the US within four years, and 95 percent sometime after that. A nearly impossible task, on top of being silly in the first place, so don't expect anyone to volunteer to pay for the privilege. There's no set date for this proposed auction of 25MHz in the 2155 to 2180MHz range, but the FCC is planning to meet on June 16 to discuss the rules of the fail sale

with 25 mhz of the spectrum? That doesn't seem like a lot to offer broadband wireless to Everyone.

Most of Britain or the cities and towns at least are covered in various wifi networks. Though that would be a norm in America? Especially with Mcdonalds doing free wifi here.

Most restaurants, truck stops, etc have wifi. Going on a road trip I was getting signals every few miles. We don't have any connection that will work while moving though, well, not one that is free.

There are some places in America that don't even have cell phone service, so forget about national WiFi. Maybe in the big cities, but not for those of us who live in the backwoods.

i know it doest sound like a lot, but its not the frequency, its the transmit strength. WiFi runs off of a small spectrum of 2.4 Ghz and a very low transmit strength to make it an area network for a home ror small business. Amplify that a bit using a signal booster, and you might be able to serve a whole city block. if you put a base station every block, you would have access covered for an entire city. Now take the signal and amplify it, at the same wavelength, and you could make it a single tower, or several towers like cell phone towers, but now giving the same amount of "radio bandwidth" to a larger area.

Now build several towers in several cities across the country and you have a seamless network.
