I just hope the FCC writes in some limitations, like "the provider of this free wireless broadband service would not be able to make any profit at all on the service portion, which would include advertising revenue, popups, etc..." because you know otherwise you'll be getting popups, banner frames and anything else they can throw at you to make a profit off the service. I know its going to cost some money to maintain, but if its supposedly being used for free access, i think making money off of it is kind of counter-productive to the FCC's idea to auction this space off.
Regardless, if the device you would need to buy to connect to the network didn't cost very much, or was part of a subscription deal where you pay for the device to connect to the network, they could use those funds to maintain it. I don't think I will be using this if it has banner ads or other forms of revenue collection such as this. I would rather snag a 3G modem and pay the service charge for a data plan than get slow access to a network infested by popups.

Actually thats not a half bad idea... Sony would be wise to team up with others in this.
wouldn't work without a hardware revision or add-on. this isn't the same as 802.11x, it runs on a different frequency. You couldn't simply connect to this without some kind of add-on device or hardware specifically made to receive this new frequency.Edited by DJZeratul - 5/24/08 at 9:48pm
