Opty 170 or Athlon X2 4400+ to install...

Thread Starter
I have my opty 170 stepping is...LCBWE? Then I just picked up for CHEAP a 4400+ for $50 bucks, the stepping on it is CCBWE.

Which would be better to drop into my A8N32-SLI Deluxe?

Thanks.

The 4400+ should have a smaller power rating - I believe 89 versus 115 for the Opty 170. If you were going to benchmark it the 4400+ will cool better and provide the exact same performance clock for clock. If you aren't going for any speed runs there's no point in changing one for th other.

Jarhead is partly correct: There were two versions of the Toledo chips (X2 4400+ and X2 4800+), differing only in wattage rating. They came out with both the 89W and 110W versions.

The 110W version is identical to the Denmark dual-core Opterons, by the way.

Now, which between the Opty 170 (LCBWE) and the X2 4400+ (CCBWE) would be better? I'd say they'd be similar, as they both have the BW version of the IMC (Integrated Memory Controller). Unfortunately, this IMC version is best-suited for super-high voltage usage (i.e., using exotic cooling) to get the most out of them. They really love voltage, and are not cold-bugged.

Try both, and please do share you findings!

Good luck, and have fun!

Thanks, just trying to figure which I should overclock. Neither one has been installed yet, the second proc will go into my old ASUS A8V-E SE.

Thanks for all the info guys, I will let you all know how it goes.

Oops the Opty is an LCB9E, not LCBWE, guess I'll go with the 4400+ X2 in the A8N32-SLI Deluxe. In the middle of tearing down the old setup and installing the new board and proc. Hope this all goes well!

If its a stepping LCB9E on that Opteron, that'd be what I'd use personally. Veedub (part of our 939 club here at OCN), is currently breaking 3.15GHz + with his LCB9E Opty 170. He was stable at 3.2GHz even with it......but wasn't comfortable with the volts.

Is the 4400+ a Manchester core? If so, there's your answer right there! Manny's do not overclock very well traditionally.

Either way, those are two great chips. Good luck .

psst, pio: An X2 4400+ cannot be a Manchester. Manchesters have half the L2 cache of the Denmark/Toledo chips.
