Router driving me up the wall

Thread Starter
Quiet often my internet on my computer will just stop working. I'm sure its probably the router because my cable modem is usually still green. I had a linksys 54g wireless router and the 4 computers that are hooked up ethernet as well as my iPhone and PS3 that are hooked up wirelessly all loose internet. So I am trying a different/cheaper Netgear 54g router right now and Im still having problems.

I really dont care how much it costs but how do I fix my problem? I need wireless still because I live in an apartment where I cant physically run ethernet everywhere... thanks

It could still be your cable modem. You can get the cable company to come out and run test on it just to make sure that's not the problem.

I could do that, thought maybe it had something to do with too many devices connected at once or something.

Also heard the ps3 might cause problems as well but I think it has done it when the ps3 was off.

Thanks for the reply. Gotta check out that htpc software in your sig

That is a ton of devices.

Flash it to DD-WRT and overclock the core, also boost the output power too.

Go over to your router, and flip it over, on the bottom should be a version WRT54 and then either GS, GL, or G at the end.

DD-WRT is the name of a linux based firmware, designed to give you options available on $600 routers, also you can overclock the core, and increase the transmit power through this firmware.

Look up what version router you have (if it is WRT54G then find the version it is, it is a number 1-8)

Now see if it is on this compatability list

Here is a guide for it

Not sure if you can do it with the vanilla firmware, but I've been having this same problem so I flashed my routers to DD-WRT and followed the advice on these pages, still testing the connection but read up on them.

Been using the DD-WRT firmware for a couple years now & it gives you so many more options for your router's capabilities.

The one thing of concern is there is a slight risk to 'brick' it, but eh this is OC.net right?

If you should ever forget the password or logon (Been guilty of this a couple times ), you have to hold the reset button in on the back for 30 seconds, power it down for a couple minutes & you should be able to get back in using "User Name": root //// "Password": admin ....... after doing so, you'll want to change that obviously.

Ive used it also , but reverted back to stock after some troubleshooting issues. Anyway Indignity is absolutely right, Ive nver had a problem flashing back and forth but DO NOT do it wirelessly Thats my tip for ou.

If your isp is like mine just ask for a new modem and theyll give you one i would try that first.
