I'd probably go for it depending on the warranty. They fix those units up to almost new condition anyway. It's a pretty solid deal as most used ones on ebay go for $350+.

I'd go for a new one. Refurbished items require around a 50-60 dollar spend down to ensure that the warranty is upheld for a year, but, after 30 days, you've only got a ONE TIME REPLACEMENT, which if you have to have it replaced, costs that 50-60 dollar payment again.

40GB PS3s are 399USD and holding strong. They come with a 1 year warranty, extendable through Sony. Your best bet is to get a retail, not a refurbished.

On a side note, I got the 60GB unit from GameStop, and it crapped out time, after time, after time, and I was on my 5th unit before I asked for equivalent credit back to buy a new system. Couldn't buy a 60, so I bought a 40. So far, so good. Good luck. Hope this helps.

Oh, thanks for the story and clarification. Didn't know it was a one-time replacement plan.

That has to be the worst PS3-related bad luck streak I've ever heard about. Sounds even worse than some of those 360 RROD horror stories (though I've heard of a guy that got through 13 X360...
