Wrong Internet Speeds?

Thread Starter
I'm wondering something about my internet connection. It's 5MPBS Download and 2MPBS Upload, I was wondering why don't I ever get more than 700 KB/s? Aren't I suppose to be getting the speed told or near the speed I thought I was getting?

internet speed is measured in bits and what your computer is reporting is in Bytes. There are 8bits in 1 Byte. And when you see advertised internet speed they rate it in Mb/s. it's the same with hard drive transfer speeds, usb transfer speeds. They are rated in bits/s with a little "b" Take you advertised download speed and divide by 8 and see how close you are to that.

Your download is limited to how much the website your downloading from is uploading to you.

try speedtest.net and report back your speeds

If you are downloading files, then I highly doubt you will ever get a 5MB/s download speed. The ratio is dependent on the server you are download from.

If you are using speedtest.net or similar website or program, then I would suggest calling your ISP and complaining to them.

If you are on DSL, that could be you max. Unless things about DSL have changed in the past few years, really havn't kept up on that.

I have FiOS and Speedtest.net is reporting near 5MPBS Download and near 2MPBS Upload. Also to stumped, if I divide 5 by 8 I get 625KB/s. So that's my actual Download speed?

yes your isp will label your speed as 5 Mbps when it really is 625KBps the diffrence is the b being lower cased or upper cased for bits and bytes. bits=b bytes=B (it makes the numbers look bigger so it seems faster)

Oh, thanks for clearing that up. Well providers should really say this because to the average person it is very misleading.

At home my mom has the 3MPBS Verizon Service and at my Grandma's, she has the 5MBPS FiOS TV Bundle thingie. Does anyone know if there is any ISP that is $30 or less that has better speeds then the 3MPBS?
