e7200 or e8400???

Thread Starter
ok, I'm on a budget.. but there isn't that much of a price difference. I will be gaming, compiling, and OC'ing as much as possible with air.

Am I better off with the 7200 or the 8400??

The E8400 is around $190-$200, E7200 around $130 I think. E8400 is better, has better stock speeds and great OC potential...the E7200 is a good amount cheaper but I have heard the it can do some massive overclocks, a lot pushing 4.0GHz! I would suggest the E8400 if you're willing to pay a bit extra, but you should really read up a bit more on the E7200 because I don't know much about them...

Welcome to OCN . I would go with the e8400 if its in your budget. I would say the e8400 has the potential of getting 200-300mhz more within intel spec voltage. I had my e8400 at 4.2ghz at 1.36v. Could you fill in you computer specs.

I've got a E7200 they are a good chip if you read up about them. people are getting 4+ ghz on a v-core of 1.23v where the E8400 needs about 1.4v to reach 4ghz.

E7200 only has 3mb L2 the E8400 has 6mb L2 this makes about a 10% diff when maxed out

Another thing to think about is your motherboard I have a P5N-E Sli and I had to flash my bios before i could even use my E7200

overall E8400 is a better chip
E7200 is a lot cheaper chip and will overclock better because of the lower fsb(1066) and it only has 3mb L2

I've had zero experience with the 7200, but I love my E8400. It just runs so nicely. =D
