8800 GSO SLI or 8800GT

Hello everyone,

I'm looking to put together a mid level gaming system for my mom. She mostly plays games like WoW, DAoC, and the Warhammer series. These games do not require that much graphics power at all. However she wants to upgrade to a system that utilizes DX10 on her Vista OS. She also wants to play Age of Conan with me, which runs through the 512mb, then on to 144mb of system memory on my 8800GTS G92 card and still only gets 40+ FPS. So I was looking at getting her a 8800gt for now and buying another a few months down the road for SLI. Then I noticed the 8800GSO's which I haven't seen before. They run off the G92 core, have 96 stream processors, 384 mbs of ram, and only cost $130.00 for a single slot and $140.00 for dual slot cooler. In SLI mode it will be something like an underpowered GTX, with 2 x 96 stream processors, 768mbs total ram, but with only 192bit x 2 memory bus bandwith. Respectfully stock clocked at 600/900mhz core clocks, that will be modestly OCed. Does anyone have experience with these cards? Is my proposed SLI= epic fail? Thanks for any advice.

Edit: I just noticed that I was actually looking at a 8800GS and a 9600GSO, which is the same card but the 9600 has a dual slot cooler. Nvidia has tricksie names.

SLi is only really needed at high resolutions. I recommend getting an 8800GT if the screens res isn't high.

She has a 20inch widescreen she plays at 1680 x 1050. I was looking at the SLI set up strictly for the amount of memory, because AoC uses so much.

You should be good with a single card for resolutions of up to 1280x1024. Higher resolutions would actually utilize the SLI. Don't get me wrong, SLI can be great at most resolutions but why have it if not used to the fullest.

my

edit : Ok, I took a while posting since I had to go outside. Seeing that she is running at 1680x1050 SLI would be very helpful for newer games.

I say go for the GT, it has more vram so it should perform better at that res.

Yea, an 8800GT will do her good. Like you mentioned, you can always SLI down the road.
