New pc build for my design work. would like your opinions

Hey guys,

firstly this build wont be happening for a while because of money.

it will be used for my design work so will be used as a workstation.

i know i could decide this by myself i mean i know what im doing very very well now but i would just like some input on these.

first one(bit more subtle/cheaper)

cpu: intel q6600 g0
mobo: asus p5k premiumwifi
ram:8gb corsair xms2 pc6400
gpu: 1gb 9800gx2 xfx
psu: 1000w corsair hx
hdd: 500gb samsung
os: vista premium 64bit
optical: pioneer

total bout £1000

but then for another £300 i could get this
cpu: 2 x xeon e5405 quad 2ghz
mobo: skulltrail mobo
ram: 4gb twin xms2 pc6400 800mhz (maybe 8gb...) (from what i can work out here http://www.scan.co.uk/products/produ...oductID=764124 it can take non buffered ram)
gpu: 1gb 9800gx2
hdd: samsung 500gb
psu: 750w corsair hx(not sure if this is enough)
vista premium
pioneer

for about £1300

so thats an extra 4 cpu cores etc.

What you guys think?

ok found the xeon e5410 for the same price as the 5405 so i would use that instead

I would go with the Q6600, if you can spend the extra $, it might be better to get the Q6700 with the higher multi. I would also suggest this RAM instead, great performer, and a great o/c'er.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231145. Now when it comes to Mobo's, the P35's are the way to go with the quads. I really like the P35-DS3L.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128059. So, there is my

I would go with the Q6600 build as well. Xeon processors are designed for server type use, and the 8 cores will be no more use to you then 4 with design applications. You need memory, lots of it and high performance. In addition the 1GB card you chose is excellent, but the power supply may be a little overkill.

Use this application to determine how much juice you will need for your system, Extreme Power Supply Calculator. I am guessing the 750W you selected in your second build will be sufficient.

Are you planning to overclock this rig at all? If not, then just pair it with DDR2-1066 like you did in the second rig. Even if you were to overclock I would still just pair it with 1066MHz memory or even this GSkill DDR2-1000 2x2GB kit, people around here swear by them.

I configured your second rig at overclockers.co.uk and it is 882, 1048 with VAT. Not sure if it is a better deal then the online retailer where you were shopping, but they seem to have more products avialable and the site is so much easier to navigate.

I would look at getting the Q6600 myself and save the money, the Q6600 will perform every bit as good as the Q6700 in a design atmosphere I believe. Also since you are looking a little ways into the future before you build this, look at the Intel P45 chipset that is just on the horizon. In fact you could pre-order it at overclockers.co.uk.

I like the first build you have listed personally, the price point and performance are going to be there. If you substituted the GSkill memory I linked for the Corsair you could save yourself 50 pounds. GSkill may not be very well known over there or as whole, but around here people hold them high regard, more than Corsair, Kingston, Mushkin, etc.
