wow... ok people.

1) downloading ANY copyrighted media (including TV shows such as house) is illegal unless the person offering the media for download has the rights to the material. Since the person upping the torrent isn't the broadcaster (who owns the rights) these torrents are illegal as well.

2) What connection speed to do you pay for? Comcast has burst enabled on their cable system. This means that IF the system isnt' under load, they'll allow you to pull down more info that you pay for in bursts. Running a speedtest and gettign 24mbps, then running another and gettign 5mbps is completely normal if you have a 5mbps connection. The 24meg result is a false positive, because it's the readings for a burst.

3) comcast doesn't throttle people for torrenting. The software that comcast uses to stop piracy doesnt' invovle thortteling. The software they use packet sniffs your traffic. If the traffic is identified as P2P Comcast tries to send you and the host a reset command. They do this repeatedly so that you can't maintain a good connection, or a connection at all.

Mmm... Ok, thanks for the enlightenment. That would explain why after a few minutes (even without any p2p traffic) the speed test drops down to 8-9 mbps.

It's what you do with those programs that can be illegal. (i.e. music/video/games/application sharing) Linux download sites want you to torrent as it puts less strain on their servers and it's free hosting. But also, have you checked your router (if you're behind one) and see if someone is "piggybacking" off of yours? if so, you need to encrypt your wireless with either WEP (better than not encrypted) or a WPA standard (harder to crack than WEP is)

Oh, and make sure to close out of your torrent client when finished and all of the torrent client processes.
My router is already encrypted. No one is piggybacking, nor would they need to, all of my neighbors have comcast. Though I did call in to comcast saying that we were having serious issues with speed since after a few more minutes the speeds will drop to 1-2 mbps, and they said that they saw a problem on their end as well. I'll probably get a new modem anyway so I don't have to worry about their silly crappy ambit modem. Maybe a signal booster too.

Sorry, my bad. I thought I read that you had 24 MBps and that you were getting throtled down to 5 mbps.

Thus, I thought that you were paying for 24.
