QUICK! Zotac 8800GTX or EVGA 8800GT AKIMBO?

Thread Starter
There's a sale going on here for a $220 shipped Zotac 8800GTX AMP! video card, and it has sparked my interest. Right now I'm stuck with a 7900GS which is giving out on me. I'm torn though, as many people say the the 8800GT is better for the price. They were referring to an ASUS model w/a glaciator cooler that sells for ~$165, and has a $30 MIR.

After looking a bit more I saw an EVGA 8800GT AKIMBO version card.

I am simply wondering if I should buy the Zotac GTX or the EVGA AKIMBO...

I am looking for the best performance/price ratio at the moment. I would be buying one card to tide me over for a while until the 4870s prove to be formidable cards in the case that they aren't upon launch.

Basically, I guess it comes down to:
a) buy the Zotac AMP! 8800GTX for $220 shipped
b) buy the EVGA 8800GT AKIMBO for $210 (shipping not specified on Zipzoomfly)
or c) wait till the 4870 series comes out

thanks for any help...

Go for the GTX, that's a really good deal and it will outperform the 8800GT. Overclock a 8800GTX and you have a very good graphics card that will run basically everything maxed.

Do you absolutely have to replace your card right now? If not, wait until you see what the new ATI will do. I doubt it'll be anything amazing, but it never really hurts to wait if you can. However, if you run a larger resolution, I'd go with the 8800GTX because of the added vRAM. Then again, the AKIMBO is by no means a bad card, and I'm sure you'd be happy with either one.

tl;dr - Flip a coin.

If you can wait then i would advise it because these upcoming GPU's will be a whole nuva ball game fella!

Seriously though, i don't know what Zotac's customer service is like but i have never heard any complaints about their cards.

I would get that over the 8800GT, but if you are plannign on upgrading you may as well get the 8800GT and step up to a GT200 later on.

Overall i would recommend the GTX though.

Yeah go for the 8800GTX as it is a better card then 8800GT but nut by much. You can find a cheap 8800GT. Also i would say wait for new cards.

alright, thanks for the input so far guys, i really appreciate it...

I'll probably be too lazy to order that GTX before the weekend sale runs out anyways, so i'll probably wait...when are the 4870s coming out again?

If I'm not mistaken the new cards should be out the second week of June. Anyone feel free to correct me. I see that you have a 20" monitor which I'm guessing you play at 1680x1050 or higher. The GTX will shine at higher resolutions with AA/AF. Assuming you've had the 7900GS for quite a while, I recommend waiting a while longer for the new ATI/Nvidia cards to come out. These cards should last you a good while if they perform like they are being made out to be.
