Intel can make up for that by overpricing their CPUs, since there would be no where else for consumers to buy.

Too bad Via is a bit behind and targeting an entirely different market, but i hear they made there first dual core cpus a while back, which is pretty awesome.

What does the government Do if there is a monopoly? im not Familiar with what happens.

They also manufacture arguably the best mobo chipsets in the business. AMD is going to be fine. The backwards momentum seems to have stopped with the 3870, and even if it takes a few years to catch up in the CPU department they will I'm sure.

Intel and AMD need eachother. I cannot see any of them going to the bin as such lol.

1st - If AMD goes out of business Intel won't be a monopoly since there are other Chip manufacturers around there that are producing cpu's , maybe not for your games/office but that doesnt make a company a monopoly.
2nd - Intel is a company that wish see high profits in the end of a quarter (who doesn't) , you can bet they produce a product that'll have demand , AMD going out of business doesn't mean Intel can take a long vacation, staying on a current platform/architechure for too much time hurts their profits, those who thinks like that have absulotly no idea in the business world.
3rd - I wouldnt bet on AMD going out so quickly , this company allthough in debt , have good enough fabs , knowledge and employees to just being bought by another giant who wish to enter the market (my guess is samsung , but the future will judge my words).

Intel will have a monopoly in mainstream computing if AMD goes

You don't really see VIA CPU's in desktops do you?

Yeah i am surprised Microsoft hasn't intervened somehow to keep the competition going and PC cheap so Windows will keep selling.

They usually force the company to break up into smaller companies, because they think that will stop the monopoly. What usually happens though is you just end up with several big monopolies instead of one big one. An example of this would be the Baby Bell situation, when AT&T was broken up because they had a monopoly, and it was thought that breaking it up into smaller companies would create more competition.

Intel wont have it for long.

Whether AMD really would go down, the market would become way more interesting for the other companies.
Don't tell me VIA couldn't make a fast Chip if they see a [big] income for it.
Remember IBM, Transmeta, NEC and even UMC...

Also MS could make Windows run on a different platform than x86 (they made RISC versions in the past).
That would bring in nVidia and others to the business.

Well I think and hope AMD does overcome this period.
And I belive there are still some investors watching the situation and holding back some cash to put into AMD if it would come that far.

So long just watch the quarterly figures.
They have become better lately (but still be red).
