[GameDaily] PS3 vs. Xbox 360: Who's Really Winning Europe?

So Microsoft continues to claim a "comfortable lead" and yet when we reached out to Sony, the company maintained that the PS3 was winning. Perhaps what it really comes down to is the definition of Europe?

Here's what a Sony rep told us, "The statement was based on the fact that cumulative sales of PS3 in Europe since its launch now exceed the cumulative sales of Xbox 360 in Europe since their launch, despite Xbox 360 having had a 16 month lead on PS3. Europe means the whole of Western Europe, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Russia. SCEE sources its market data from official sources such as ChartTrack and Gfk, from their retailers and from a variety of additional sources. SCEE has been using the same methodology for the last 10 years or so."
Source

Sony once again appears to be lying to their customers. I don't care how marketroid companies like ChartTrack aggregate and disaggregate sales figures for their customers; but when Sony is talking to the general public (you and me), "Europe" means frickin Europe, end of discussion. The last time I checked, the Middle East and Russia are in Asia, not Europe; and Africa is a whole different continent onto itself!

Come on Sony, stop lying to make your numbers look better. You're in third place and you know it. Trying to trick us into thinking otherwise isn't the path to elevation; release better games and continue to get the console price down, and then maybe you can climb out of last place.

Maybe they are going by region settings relating to the consoles. I'm totally guessing here. Does the Middle East, Africa, and Russia have PAL systems or do they have NTSC systems? If they have PAL systems, then Sony is probably thinking total PAL system sales and not physical geography.

Yes clearly using "Europe" for those territories isn't geographically truthful, but it's not like they hid the truth from us, the guy was pretty straight-up.

A lot of the sales numbers specifically for consoles use North America, Japan, Europe, and Oceania. You can't say "Asia" anymore because that would obviously include Japan. I personally believe that "North America", "Japan", and "other" would suffice but when the topic of Europe came up, both companies just worked the meaning of "Europe" to their benefit, Sony being the guiltiest of course.

Why can't we just focus on hard facts here in the News Section? PR statements are probably the lamest thing to post about.

that article really means nothing without saying what Microsoft definition of Europe is. To me its just as fishy that microsoft will say they are in the lead but not disclose the info. They are both full of poop and going to try and make them sound good that article didnt do both sides justice though

Yeah Vulcan how dare you post anything against Sony!

Still both good consoles, not a huge Wii fan yet.

Press releases about sales figures, especially ones reported figures that are in dispute, very much is "news". Ever read the Business section of your local newspaper?

By your argument, half of the election coverage in the "real" news would not qualify as news since it's basically all PR statements from one candidate or PAC, either trumping themselves up or attacking the opponent.

That's basically what I inferred from the comment, yes.

Ive lost all respect for Sony. and i had little to begin with!.

They need a quick firm kick in the gonads.

Puke like this reminds me why i brought a Wii .

I still think the PS3 is the better of the two consoles, regardless of sales. but you wouldn't catch me dead with either of them. enless i stole them and i'm on my way to sell them off to some poor sap .
