EDIT: Sorry about the way this post must look...your original title made it look like you just wanted to know what it is. Good luck.

If you ever get a message prompt saying that NTLDR is corrupt or missing you can simply boot from your Windows XP installation CD and use the Recovery Console to replace the corrupt file. Once you have booted from the CD and entered Recovery Console you will have to type the following;

copy e:\\i386\
tldr c:\\
copy e:\\i386\
tdetect.com c:\\

Be sure to replace "e" with your correct designated optical drive letter.

Try to clean the CD real good, that allways works for me. When I install XP it gives me 3 or 4 of those kind of errors throughout the installation.
Sometimes even opening and then closing the dvd player works.

Hope this helps

I had this very same problem for the first time a few days ago, after trying to format my rig and start over. I'm running Vista and a raid-0 setup. I tried everything and finally the only thing that fixed it was to stick my old xp disc in and start to install it, then stop it short and then boot with the vista cd. If not for having the xp on disc I don't know how I would of solved this, and it is still a problem because I am giving my old rig away and promised them the XP OS.... So if this ever happens to me again, I'm going to need to know a different way of fixing this....

So if anybody has more input or experience with this, I would like to learn more about it and how to fix this problem a different way. I'll repeat what I think the OP is saying, is that he can't even get to the cd to recover anything. I sure couldn't......
