Build Advice: Cheapest QX6850 build

Thread Starter
I'm eligible to buy a QX6850 straight from intel in June and so am trying to put together a nice, mid-range budget Build around that chip. I will be overclocking, but only on air as i don't have nearly the means nor time to maintain a water setup. I want something with an x38 chipset, so will be going ATI with my card(s). This is what i have so far:

MoBo @ $185 DFI LANPARTY DK X38-T2R LGA 775 Intel X38

CPU @ $230: Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6850 Kentsfield 3.0GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 130W Quad-Core Processor

RAM @ $280: 2x G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)

Video card @ ~$350: Here's where i'm a bit shady, should i go for 2x3870's and crossfire them? Or just get one 3870x2? Also i'm not familiar with what are good makes for ati cards, so any advice is greatly appreciated.

HDD @ $120: 2x Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA

Case @ $182: Antec P182 Gun Metal Black 0.8mm cold rolled steel ATX Mid Tower

Will be reusing my current PSU and DVD drive.

So i figure around $1400 for the whole build but will go up to $1500 if it's really worth it. Also i'll be using a tuniq tower or TRUE for the cpu cooling. Thanks in advance!

I'm sorry, but mid-range and QX6850 shouldn't be going together yet, please, say it isn't so! Is my Q6600 now considered low-end? :'( Well, it still beats the snot out of any single CPU you can buy (without overclocking it) so I'm happy for now.

On-topic, I'd say you would probably be better off with a single 3870X2 as it costs less than two individual cards (in my experience, if that's not the case where you are then let me know ) and you still have the option to upgrade if you really want to go nuts after the price drops when the HD 4xxx series launches. Speaking of which, can you hang on a month? I know everyone always says wait, wait then wait some more, but the 4xxx series cards are rumoured to be launching next month (16th of June according to fudzilla) so it really might be worth waiting, if only to see how far the price drops on the current gen.

Why the two hard drives? I mean why not get a single 500GB drive and partition it into two? Are you planning on setting up a RAID or just using one as a backup/for pagefile etc? I'm not criticising, just wondering, I mean a single 500GB drive would usually perform faster than a single 250GB drive (if you only had one drive) if you're using two so you can spread the load of Windows/OS and games/apps, that's fair enough, just asking things to help you think about it but I'm sure you've already considered it.

Everything else looks in order, nothing jumps out at me as being "omg bad stay away" I would comment on prices and good places to buy, but I'm not familiar with the US market so I'll just end this post right here.

haha, i'm mainly trying to take advantage of an awesome deal but don't have the means to do anything too nuts, i just want a solid performance rig.

As for the hard drives, i do plan to set up a raid-0 array having a 750gig external as my backup.

I probably will go with the 3870x2, quadfire does sound enticing.

i would pick a set of PC2-8500 ram. The crucial ballistix are excellent and cheaper than the set you linked.

Also, the P182 is designed for silence, not airflow. you stick a couple of 3870x2's in there and its going to be like a furnace especially if you plan to overclock.

Have a look at the Coolermaster 690 (cheap) or an antec 900 or 1200 for much better air cooling.

go with the x2. You can always add another later.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148069

here is a link to the crucial ram. $76/pair. If you don't plan to oc the ram though, I'd suggest 2x2 gb kit instead.

you haven't bought a video card yet?
you should wait until mid-june for ati's 4870, supposedly they should be around $300 or less.

Ah, that's fair enough, RAID 0 is amazing, no matter what the critics say.

See which is cheaper, a single 3870X2 or dual 3870s, but I still think it'd be better to have the option of four-way Crossfire and the 3870X2 works alone with no messing about, it just works (in theory, anyway ). Just be sure your PSU has enough PCI-E 8 pin power connectors for two 3870X2s in the future, unless you want to get a new PSU at the same time, assuming you go down that route.

Also, the QX6850 being 65nm is one hot sucker. What air cooling do you intend to use?
