Adventures in Lapping, round two!

First I want to give thanks to leimrod, David (insulglass), and Syrillian for their SUPER informative posts on lapping!

I know this is kind of out of the blue, but I kept up with leimrod's Adventures in lapping and ended up re-lapping my E6600, and for practice the stock heatsink off an AMD 3200 equipped eMachine, and my aluminum zalman 9700.

First things first, fanboys are going to tell me that the zalman has a mirror finish already, and you know what?

But as leimrod pointed out already, the differences can be stark. I used a metal artsy machinist ruler and found my zalman to be concave, and as soon as I began lapping it, LO AND BEHOLD its shaving down the outsides first! Leaving me with a nice concavey-pool of mirror finish!

at 320grit and about 10 minutes of bi-directional lapping wetly, to my great delight, i discovered that the heatsink is made of copper! WOW! I am not sure why this thought had not ocurred to me earlier but what a novel idea! A copper heatsink with a mirror (maybe nickel?) concave finish!

Good thermodynamics batman! Not only was i sandwiching far too much TIM on my already poorly lapped E6600, it was also stuck in a pocket of air! Well that just wouldn't do at all!

Using the grits 320, 400, and 2000, and about 5 hours of lapping each following David's advice (lots o' water!) later.....we haz laps!.

I grid tested them all with a ruler and a printed grid, forgot to get a pic of me comparing the grid in the reflection with a ruler for accuracy, but they all passed, not sure if i managed my links and attatchments correctly.

I know im a weirdo with my grit selection, luckily if you dig enough wal-mart has a wonderful little automotive selection of high count grits...and enough elbow grease will get the job done well enough for my purposes.

The TIM has sat for maybe 20 minutes and im idling with a 3.2ghz OCed E6600 at 26C. Load seems to be ~39C (only ran orthos for enough time to watch the temps even out)

=)

comments? (if there are dumb errors with this message.......its 230am..sue me
