It depends on which revision of the 680i board you have (for the Quad core OCing). If you have the A1 or T1 revision (CPU-Z shows it as revision 2 in the motherboard tab) you can OC quad cores just fine as the GTL REF voltage control was fixed. if you have the AR, TR or LT, you wont get very high of an OC with the quad core. Just make sure to update to at least the P32 bios if you decide on the E8400. The board will not boot with a Wolfdale unless you have that bios.

I have a 680i thread linked below in my signature. it has more info on the board, especially the OC ability of the different revisions thanks th Choggs.

Both Q6600 and E8400 have good overclocking potential on the 680i A1 board. Again, as long as it's the A1 revision, which has control voltage fixes opposed to the T1 or TR revisions.

What exactly will you be using this computer for?

Q6600, The best for your needs
E8400, For gaming
E7200, For gaming

QX6700 OEM is now only £200 on google now that has the multi unlocked and is only £50 more cash than a Q6700

Good luck maxing out an overclocked E8400

I cant see myself even using more than what my CPU can dish out... I have a hard time maxing it out as it is.

Folding is the only thing that makes this CPU go aboove 90% usage.
