Help me get my A+

Thread Starter
Well, I'm going to start getting my certifications soon, starting with A+
I was hoping that anyone with experience could recommend me some books or give me some advice regarding this test. If i pass, i can get reimbursed by work, so I'd like to make sure that happens

Anyways, thanks for looking, and I'm sure i'll be posting more questions about certifications when i move on to the M$ certs.

Have you thought about going to college?

A+ is kind of a joke, and the rest of the Certifications are much higher -up than it in terms of knowledge required.

Yeah, i've considered college. The fact is, at this point any college i'm going to do is online, and i can't quite afford it yet either way. Also, as I stated before, I'd like to get the A+ so that i can show my boss that I am serious about moving forward with training, and am willing to put in the effort so that work will pay for college.

Well first, begin by visiting your local libraries and bookstores, read up on some of the A+ books they have.

Next up, what is A+? Well it is essentially two things, the first is the hardware portion, and the second involves some basic knowledge of operating systems.

Wiki for it

So if I were you, I would start frequenting the local library, or pickup some books on PC troubleshooting, play with old hardware that is from random, partially broken machines, and try assembling a system out of it.

From what I have seen and heard it is very easy if you know some basic stuff about PC hardware / OS's.

As far as certifications go, A+ is pretty much the only one that can be done with little training. The other ones, especially the Microsoft ones will require a bit of some schooling (associates degree or Bachlors) and experience in the field.

A+ is a good certification to have when a company is specifically looking for it. In fact the last two jobs I interviewed for actually required that the applicant have A+ certification.
The way I studied for it was by buying an A+ book and reading it cover to cover, twice. I passed both sides of the A+ test on the first try. The questions on the test are mostly random, so I can’t give you an exact on what you need to study.

The Microsoft test can be tricky. I have my MCDST. Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician. It consist of 70-271 and 70-272. I passed 70-272 on the first try adn 70-271 on the second try. I studied for those by using a training guide and playing with Windows XP at the same time.

From what i've heard, the 2006 A+ test is more difficult than the prior test(s). Either way, i've been playing with computers since i was really young, so the hardware isn't the hard part for me. Mainly its the software/M$ side that i'm worried about.

Yep, you would be correct. They paid quite well in the area I live in as well. Surprisingly.
