Best CPU for $150?

Thread Starter
I'm looking to upgrade my processor in the system I currently have, and the max I'm willing to go is $153 for a Athlon 64 X2 6000+ (on Newegg). However, I haven't learned a whole lot about the other types of AMD CPU's. Would I be best of with a 6000+, or can I find an even better one for the same price?

Note: $150 is my maximum price, so I'd like to keep it there or below. Thanks in advance =D

I'm trying to hold myself back from suggesting the E8400 or Q6600 for $20 more...

If you're going to stick with AM2, the 6000 is probably the best performing chip for $150... the 2x1MB L2 is pretty handy for gaming

But how much better is a 6400+? I mean, will it really make a big difference in performance? I'd probably use that 10 bucks for another gig of memory. (Well, 10 plus another 8) >.>

I haven't been keeping up with AMD lately, but I do know that they just released some Tri Cores in that price range. Not sure if the newest BIOS for your motherboard supports them or not but it might be worth looking into.

$149 - AMD 8450

Most applications probably can't utilize the third core anyway, but I'd do my research to verify this. Hopefully others here who have been following AMD more closely will chime in.

I suppose I should've mentioned my mobo is an AM2 slot, so I don't think the Tri-Cores will work? I am not sure if AM2+ will fit in an AM2

Considering that, should I go with a black-edition 5000+ and just screw around with overclocking it and hope I don't screw up (not very experienced). Or just go safe with a 6000+

Actually, according to the Gigabyte website, your mobo will run AM2+ cpus, just the HT3.0 is downgraded to HT1.0. So if you really want a Tri-core, your mobo will run it (you might need to update to a new bios first though).

From the Gigabyte site:

CPU Support List
Fx = Since BIOS Version OK = Test OK! N/A = Not support "-" = Under Testing

(Note) If you install AMD AM2+ CPU on AM2 motherbord, the system bus speed will downgrade from HT3.0(5200MHz) to HT1.0(2000 MT/s) spec; however, the frequency of AM2+ CPU will not be impacted.

What do you do with your computer? I think the best all around value would be the X2 5000+ Black Edition which has an unlocked multiplier. It's only $87.99 or 65.01 cheaper than the X2 6000+. The only thing is BE CPUs don't come with coolers but if you OC after market is the best way to go anyway.
