Motherboard or possibly something else fried?

Thread Starter
I got a laptop from a friend and he said that he lost his adapter, so I figured I could just buy a new one for it but I'm worried that it won't work because around where the power cord goes in the laptop it is melted all around it and when I asked him he said it was because he used an adapter that was a higher voltage and the computer overheated but he says it will still work so I need to know will it work or is something definetly fried and if so what will I need to fix?

Well, first of all you have to figure out whether or not it is actually fried. If you don't want to buy the right adapter, I suggest you take it to a PC shop and have them check it out for you. A good place should do it for free while you're standing there, don't let them take it from you and try to charge you for it or something like that. If it is "fried", it could be that it needs a new battery. Whether it will be stable or not after the fact, I do not know. Laptops are hard to fix being that they are for the most part proprietary, which brings me to the conclusion that if anything is wrong you should look for another one.
