[Solved]Wireless works, cable doesn't?

Hey guys, I need some help with a problem I'm having. I have three computers, two are connected to the internet via cable, one, the laptop I'm on now, connects wireless. Problem is, only my wireless works! I tried switching the plugs around, turning the modem off and on, restarting it, and even calling Verizon tech support. Verizon was nice and helpful but they basically said that my modem was screwed up or something because they couldn't connect to it and that I would need to buy a new modem because the warranty expired.

But what is weird is that the lights on the cables connecting my two desktops blink, which leads me to believe that something is working, but of course one or more things are not.

The Verizon tech guy basically said that I would need to either buy a new modem or get wireless cards for my computers.

Modems and internet and whatnot are not an area of computers that I have really looked into so I was wondering what you guys think. Should I buy a new modem? If so, do I just plug it in, or is there some set-up process I should be aware of? Or should I buy wireless cards? Is wireless just as fast as through a wire? If I do get a card, should I get one that plugs into the USB or an internal one?

Thanks guys, I really want this solved quickly because, well, I think you guys realize how important the internet is! I will rep for any help of course.

1) max speed for wireless G 54mbps, max speed for CAT5 is 100mbs. Your internet is proably 5mbps, so it really only matters if you do a lot of file transfers from PC to PC.

2).... you use the word "modem" too loosely... almsot NO modems have built in routing. I'm hoping that you own a router. if not then you have no problem, as most modems can only provide internet to 1 PC at a time.

3) if you do own a router, try resetting it to factory defaults. most routers have a pin (tiny) reset button on the back. Hold it down 30 seconds, unplug router (keeping reset pusehd in) for 30 seconds, release reset, then plug router back in.

need more info to offer more help.

Try checking your NIC with a from loopback-ping 127.0.0.1 (command prompt)this will tell you if it is transmitting & receiving correctly. If it is do a ipconfig/all in command prompt and copy and paste it here, it will better help us address your problem. Also try to connect your notebook via wired and see if that connects to the internet.

1. I take it you mean that as far as surfing the web, speed will be the same, but when I share files between my computers it is slower?

2. Yeah modem/router, I have no idea what is what. It's a big black box that Verizon installed that sits behind my monitor, has blinking yellow/green/orange lights and blugs in to my computers. I honestly have no idea what the difference is between the two (Although certainly Google is a friend here, I'll do some simple reasearch on my own).

3. The reset button I tried as per Verizons instructions. And to no avail.

Sorry I have no idea what NIC or loopback-ping are lol. Verizon did have me open up ipconfig, and I have used it before when setting up a static IP. When I get home from school today I'll try and get that information posted here.

Thanks guys!

You've a class B ip address (169.x.x.x) and it should be class C (192.x.x.x).You will have to use your notebook to get the ip address(IPv4 Address),default gateway(192.168.x.x), and subnet mask(255.255.255.x).Using the ipconfig/all command.

EDIT: Try setting a static ip.
1)Go to Network in start menu.
2)Look at the top of the window and select Network Sharing.
3)On the left-hand side click Manage Network Connections.
4)Right Click Local Area connections.
5)Select Properties.
6)Scroll down to Internet Protocol v4 (TCP/IPv4)highlight this.
7)Select properties.
8)Under the General Tab,click use the following IP address. Assign accordingly.
