Hey, this is my first time OCing so go easy, here's the current configuration I have that's stable and idles around 52c, loads around 60c:

Athlon X2 3800+ Windsor running at 2.4ghz (10x multiplier, 240), 1.375v
2G DRAM running at 400mhz DDR (clocked to 667mhz in the BIOS then multiplied by the FSB of 240), DRAM at 1.9v, 4-4-4-12-2T timings, HTT 4x240.
Coolermaster cheapo cooler, tons of fans
8800 GTS 640mb
Dynex 500w PSU

The system was OCing for a while at a 9x multiplier and some other settings at 2.45ghz and 1.275v, but then stopped working, so I set it to 2.4ghz and the above settings and changed the voltage to 1.375 and it ran stably for about a week and then refused to boot windows, so then I upped the DRAM voltage to 1.9 (had it at 1.85 but it failed prime95 after about 30 minutes) and now it seems stable. It refused to boot at all with 8x multipliers at 2400mhz even when the HTT was cranked down to 3x or 4x and the voltages of the CPU were turned up (I didn't mess with the DRAM voltages at 8x, though, so maybe that was it).

So here are my questions: Why did it run okay for a while and then begin refusing to boot until I upped the voltages? Am I doing any permanent damage to my system that's causing this to happen? Are there any improvements you guys would make to these BIOS settings (without changing the heatsink, because I have no money for another one right now)?

Also, would a Phenom be worth it on this system when they go down in price, despite the 1000mhz HTT 1.0 limitation?

I'm overclocking to overcome bandwidth bottlenecking for gaming, and I wasn't sure how much it'd be worth it to go over 2400mhz because of the thermal dissipation and power consumption..

Edit: According to Coretemp instead of speedfan my temp is 37-38c idle, 50-56c load.
