Sound glitch with surround sound and HDTV

Okay so I had no idea where else to put this. But I could relate it to my actual desktop if you wanted me too. =] My problem is when I watch tv on just a regular coaxial cable some channels glitch in the sound. It disappears for about half a second every few minutes. Its connected via SDPIF Digital out to my Sony STR-K840P. It gets really annoying and sometimes (especially in Family Guy) the punchline to a joke gets muted and it is no longer funny. I get over-the-air HD channels through the coaxial cable as well as regular cable. Technically here in Phoenix we get free channels (about 20 of them) because I have cable internet and I have a split cable connecting my tv and modem out to the same cable outlet in the wall. I have a 42" Philips tv which I got by returning my previous 42" Philips for this newer model. (only difference is really in appearance and extra HDMI out and I saved $200 at Costco) I didn't have this problem in my previous tv because the surround sound was connected via RCA cables. The RCA cable doesn't work for some reasons in this new tv which is why I decided to connect it to my surround sound via Digital SPDIF-out. Again no idea why it mutes cable sporadically at random moments. Any help would be appreciated. thanks!

you are better off going to AV forum and not a computer forum for this...

but i'll take a shot anyways, i'd try:
1. see if your tv has dolby digital encoding and turn that on to encode the digital audio signal, see if that helps
2. some sort of noise in your line. It could be your tv's encoder's problem, or your reciever, or some cheap cable
