Mass Effect PC Thread - Page 10

How are you guys enjoying it on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the most. I plan on picking it up tomorrow, I haven't been this excited since waiting to get Bioshock or my current motherboard, ram and videocard.

I would say 9. It's almost perfect. It's very cinematic, and makes you "a part of the game." My only gripe is that it doesn't have anti-aliasing. Which isn't THAT big of a deal, you can just force it through the Nvidia control panel.

Oh and another thing, don't use dynamic shadows or the "add noise" effect.

Cool, thanks for the heads up.

May I ask how well is it running? Fps-wise maxed out including AA

I'm running it around 50fps average. Resolution being at 1680x1050, everything maxed. It's not a GPU-hungry game like Crysis (thank god).

I can't give the game a final score yet, but it would definitely be between and 8 and 9.

The graphics are decent, but not quite as good as I would like. The facial modeling is awesome, but the clothing textures are really bad. They apparently use very low res textures for clothing.

The environments also can be a bit basic, seeming very empty in places, particularly the Citadel. There they are no more detailed than the SW:KOTR maps, something which surprised me. I was hoping for complex interiors with multiple items and objects, kind of like Oblivion. Same goes for the exterior.
The graphics on the planet surfaces are also a bit uninspired, but I definitely haven't seen many of them yet.

I'm having a few sound anomalies as well; background sounds randomly turning on and off and some playing at really high volume and drowning out the dialog.

The game makes up for it in game play. The combat system, skills, weaponry etc. are very well thought out.

I keep v sync on so it's always at 60 FPS with everything maxed an 4x anti aliasing forced in the Nvidia CP. The FPS drops in certain places, like the Citadel tower.

FYI for all concerned, the UR3 engine doesn't support AA. Forcing it in NCP or nHancer doesn't seem to affect it (for me anyway). Some say that renaming the ME.exe to "UT3.exe" and forcing UT3 to AA will make it work for ATI cards, but I've tried w/ my 88s and there was no change in IQ or FPS, so I don't think it'll work.

Also, the UR3 engine caps frames at 62, vsync or no. You can change this by opening [MassEffectDirectory]/Engine/Config/BaseEngine.ini and changing the value of "bSmoothFrameRate" to "FALSE".

I get pretty decent framerates, except for some reason in the Citadel Tower. Drops to <30fps on some occasions. Must be those trees or something.

Forcing AA in the Nvidia CP definitely works for me, no question about it and no file renaming. And if you set v sync for any game it will cap it automatically to whatever the monitor's refresh rate it. Mine is 60 Mhz, so my frame counter never goes above 60 FPS, not to 62 either.
