My thinking is that it's just another function run by the GPU. We don't need other cards for: fog, lights, water, textures or anything else, it's all done by the GPU as normal. It seems that physics would just be the next step for those items, and calculating the interaction between them.

Sure it's probably gonna be a performance hit, but the cards are pretty powerful already...

No it's _exactly_ the same. PhysX is an API and is used in games at that level. From the game developers standpoint it shouldn't matter which kind of hardware you have. If you have compatible acceleration hardware, it uses it, otherwise it runs in software (which is why UT3 works whether or not you have it). Your choices are PPU's or GPU's right now. Nvidia used CUDA to implement the hardware translation of that API on their GPUs, but that doesn't affect game developers at all. It is also questionable if the Nvidia cards can deliver the performance of the separate PPU without significantly dropping frame rates. Currently there is no good test method, we'll have to wait and see. I like my PPU.

Actually, I will since I have an 8-series card at the moment. My whole point was complaining that Nvidia develops CUDA, but still can't get it right and add DX10.1 support.

Besides, I find it hard to believe that game developers would alienate a huge portion of their potential customers by making their game only compatible with one GPU manufacturer's cards.
