Rampage OC Help & Questions

Thread Starter
Dear All,
I have just joined as I have become frustated that after building my new system, I am having such a hard time figuring out how to overclock.

I am using the Asus Rampage with an E8400, OCZ 4gb 8500 1066 and a 3970X2.

I have read dozens of guides and threads and am just stuck. I understand that in order to OC the CPU I must increase the FSB in jumps of 20 to 30 until I reach a stage where I reach maximum FSB on my stock voltage (not sure where that is, my CPU voltage is 1.92, is that the same as Vcore?)

Now that is really where it ends for me, I cannot work out what I have to change (or where!) for cpu voltage (if needed).

I also have no idea how to set up a memory oc, the guides and posts just send me spinning!

I am more of a hands on learn by doing!

If anyone could list the manual settings in Bios and voltages for a tested E8400 3.5 cpu OC and maybe the same for the memory (where in Bios and settings) it would really help me out. I would then be able to see where to go (BIOS big green, scary. I have looked at Extreme Tweaker and it is a different language to me!)

I have good air cooling with 5 120mm Fans and 1 240mm in the Cosmos S (plus Zalman 9700 on CPU)

I currently record

CPU voltage 1.92
CPU PLL voltage 1.53
FSB Termination Voltage 1.16
DRAM Voltage 1.90
NB Voltage 1.32
SB Voltage 1.04
SB 1.5 Voltage 1.504
DRAM Controller Voltage Ref .96

3.3v Voltage 3.152
5v Voltage 5.016
12v Voltage 11.928

Temperatures

CPU Idle 25c (77F)
MB 29c (84F)
NB 39.5c (104F)
SB 37c (98F)

As for Graphic cards, if anyone has experience using the Catalyst Control Centre Overdrive feature with a 3870 X2 I would love to know!

(I also accept responsibility for the advice given here and realise changes voltages is a risky business if not done in an informed manner, I moment I just do not have anywhere to start!)

Thank you all!

First of all - Welcome to the forums:

CCC is crap for overclocking - just have to wait for the new? ATi Tool or a new rivatuner.

A good thread about the Rampage and overclocking [with peoples settings] is these three - they are VERY long though [around 100 pages each atm]

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=179580
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=181921
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=160849

Look towards the end, as some others have had similar setups - sign up and ask away.
I haven't yet noticed a similar thread here [Overclock.net] yet though

Hope that helps

Welcome to OCN

Well here we go.

Put the following as I say and the rest in auto and you be fine.

In Extreme Tweaker

Ai Overclock Tuner - Manual
CPU Ratio Setting - 9
FSB Frequency - 400
PCIE Frequency - 100

DRAM Frequency - 1066MHz
DRAM Timing Control - Manual
CAS Latency - 5
RAS to CAS - 5
RAS PRE Time - 5
RAS ACT Time - 15

DRAM Static Read Control - Disabled
Ai Clock Twister - Moderate
Ai Transaction Booster - Manual
Common Performance Level 6

CPU Voltage - 1,20 (don´t go above 1,3625)
CPU PLL Voltage - 1,50
North Bridge Voltage - 1,45
DRAM Voltage - 2,10 - 2,15
FSB Termination Voltage - 1,40
South Bridge Voltage - 1,05
SB 1,5V Voltage - 1,50
Loadline Calibration - Enabled

CPU Spread Spectrum - Disabled
PCIE Spread Spectrum - Disabled

In Advanced

C1E Support - Disabled
CPU TM Function - Disabled
Vanderpool Technology - Disabled
Execute Disabled Bit - Disabled
Max CPUID Value Limit - Disabled

Now you got your CPU runing at FSB 400 multi 9 Clockspeed 3,6GHz and memory at 1066 5-5-5-15 and this is a good start.

Then you can start bring up your FSB in 10 at a time and with it "CPU Voltage" (I should say 1,3625 as max) and DRAM voltage (check your max volt on those memory first, 2,2v should be fine), it should not be that hard to reach FSB 450, 4,05GHz and memspeed 1080 but keep that memspeed as close as you can to 1066 for now and check with Prime95 (small FFT) on your way up so you´re stable.

You can probably reach higher with that E8400 then 4,05 so keep push that FSB up and check so that your are stable.

Your memory can probably reach 1150 5-5-5-15 but you have to do a lot of mem tweak in BIOS to get there but more of that later, start to find your max CPUspeed first then we can get that max memspeed.

thanks ghost leader. I was also looking for some advice on overclocking. I too just acquired asus rampage and want to try some OC. If you don't mind muppetts, instead of creating a new thread, i can post my attemps here too? for an OC noob like me, this is a good start. I tried reading the guides but they seem too vague. I was looking for something more specific to my mobo and this seems like a good starting point. thank again mate.
cheers.

p.s. i also found the user manual for the mobo quite helpful in reference to temps and voltage.
p.s.s for a q9450, what is the volt threshold? 1.36v ?

I´m glad if I can help, I have tested a lot on my Rampage so I pretty much know what it can do or not.

You guys should read this article from Anandtech, it´s really good.

Dam - i was just about to post that link - beat me to it
The guys over at XtreamSystems have many layouts of settings like what Ghostleader laid out in the above post.

If you get stuck, just ask over there and you will probably get 3 or 4 guys post their settings for their system - in my case, on of the ones i got when i asked worked perfectly first time - 3.6ghz for my Q6600

Also - my motherboard isn't actually a Rampage, but a P5E [stripped down rampage] but i have it running the rampage bios.

Well, this article is the one I usually recommend because those threads are to long to read (but they are worth to read), so you posted those Xtreme threads and I this Anandtech article so together we contribute to those guys.

How is it down under, winter is coming I suppose, we got summer coming up here in the north and outdoor hobbies compete with my PC time.

Nice OC you have, I suppose FSB 400 on that quad at 3,2 - 3,6 work just fine together with those ram at 1000 4-4-4-12.

How does that Rampage BIOS work with your P5E?
What version do you use?
Can you access all settings?

What is your setting regarding DRAM static, Clock Twister, Transaction Booster, Common PL and do you use any Pull Ins?

Thank you so much, it is nice to find a friendly site, I have tried at other and got very aggressive responses along the lines of bugger off and figure it out yourself.

Being able to input and seeing where will really help me get my head around it (thanks Ghost!).

Kamran, go ahead and post mate, I am sure others will use too.

I have one question, I read the anandtech review and saw this.

'As we have discussed before Loadline Calibration is best left disabled, especially when using the newer 45nm CPUs. Our testing has shown these settings induce power instabilities, even when using lower voltages. In addition, when enabled the option sometimes requires more CPU voltage than would otherwise be necessary, meaning increased power dissipation and higher temperatures.'

I have a 45nm chip, should I Dis-able Loadline Calibration?

I know, I have tried with and without and this is what I think.

If you disable Loadline Calibration (LC) you have to set higher CPU volt because of the vdroop gets bigger and to be stable under load you may have to go above that safe volt boarder and most of the time your rig is in idle and in that way you run with higher CPUvolt then necessary.

If enabled it´s the opposite, you get smaller vdroop and OC higher with lower CPU volt set in BIOS and yes, Anandtech are certainly right that you can get crashes in idle.

It has never happed for me when LC are enabled and I have done a lot of stress testing on my E8400 on different ASUS board.

You can read this thread and see what those guys think.

If I am sticking to 3.6 (which I would like to) and the CPU Voltage is 1.2 then I am not really in risk of the spikes going over 1.4 anyway (Load Calibration on or off)?? Would that be right as I may as well have it enabled if it is not really an issue and as I understand I get lower volts in the CPU on Idle (and my PC sits on for about 4 hours a day for casual internet use.

Thanks again for the input Ghost and I will try the set up out tomorrow as travelling for work right now (but thinking OC!)
