Build Advice

Hi all! I've got a buddy who wants me to build a rig. He'll use it primarily for some sort of CAD (not sure what programs exactly) / rendering, and perhaps light gaming. I know nothing of CAD, so I've got a couple of questions:

Is an 8800GT good for CAD stuff?

Are there video cards that are designed specifically for CAD that would be better? (while considering bang for the buck)

He specifically wants to stick with WinXP...and wants tons of RAM. How much RAM do ya'll think he'll actually need/use for CAD stuff with WinXP? (and how much can WinXP actually use?)

As always, I'm ever grateful of the advice!

Well make sure he's using XP x64 to use 4 gig ram.

And yes the 8800GT will be good for amateur CAD stuff.

Does he really, really want XP. XP 64-bit is notoriously bad with drivers and program support. Vista 64-bit is pretty much on the money now...It actually runs nice. I would say depending on his budget get an 8800GTS (G92) - its not that much more. I can't see him needing more than 4gb of RAM but that decision is his .

I would go for a p35 based motherboard and a q6600 - even though few CAD programs support multi-cores its worth having for the future.

As for xp or vista 32-bit that can only see around 3.2gb (ish) of RAM. Vista Home premium 64-bit can see up to 16gb of RAM (Limit imposed by microsoft)
