Overclock help/suggestions

Hello all,

Before I state my issue I'll list my settings.

Msi P6N Sli Platinum Bios V1.6
Q6600 Quad 2.4ghz G0
CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 800 (6400) 5-5-5-16
HSF Arctic cooling freezer 7 pro

3.0Ghz
(Manual)
FSB 1334 (1:1)
Mem Clock 667 (1:1)Ratio
CPU Ratio x9

CPU volt = Stock
Mem voltage =1.9
NB voltage = 1.275
SB = stock
FSB VTT = 6%
Spread Spectrum All Disabled

Ran Prime as follows with no errors or lockups:
5 Hrs Blend Test
4 Hrs In Place large FFTs
4Hrs Small FFTs

Current idle temps are at 38C (Air conditioner is currently off though which normally it isn't)
Load temps top around 58C with a couple of peaks at 60C but no higher. (again AC was off )

Initially I couldn't get into windows at all with OCing to 3ghz. It would post but not boot into windows xp. Bumping the FSB VTT to 2% allowed it to boot up all the way but BSOD after a few hours. 4% on the VTT same thing only longer before BSODs, 6% same. Still getting random BSODs though only when OCing

Been reading a few threads on other forums saying some had to up the FSB VTT to 16% before being completely stable and others saying that the FSB VTT should be just lower than the CPU voltage.

I'm not sure if too high a FSB VTT can damage anything. Too many conflicting opinions out there.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Side note... I notice in the BIOS that the mem voltage was set to 1.8 and my ram is rated for 1.9 - I adjusted it to 1.9

P.S. I'm pretty new to OCing but I've been doing as much reading up on it as I can. Be gentle lol

I can see a problem for your future OCing. I think your RAM might hold you back unless it has a great tolerance for speed. You might also want to raise your vcore to help get you past 3ghz. I left my NB on AUTO then found I could lower it from what the board selected and it still runs stable with less power.

Not really looking to go past 3gHz at all... Was just looking for something moderate. Do you think the ram is still an issue?

I think that RAM is fine for any overclock.
Try bumping the Northbridge (MCH) voltage up a couple of notches. What is your current core voltage, you may have to increase the core voltage to stop the BSODs
post #5 of 24
Set your CPU volt to 1,30 - 1,325 for 3,0GHz to 3,2GHz OC on a Q6600.
Set your NB to 1,35 - 1,45.
Set your FSB VTT to 4%
Set your memory to unlinked and 800.
Set your memory timing to 5-5-5-15 2T
Set your memvolt to 1,90.

So if you have your FSB to 1334, multi to 9 and mem 800 you have 3,0GHz on your quad and your memory run 800 5-5-5-15 2T and you should be stable.

If you want to push some more on that quad or mem, just send me a PM

Good luck

Just remembered what I wanted to ask.

Should I run the RAM at 667 for the 1:1 ratio or just run it at 800?

Will I notice any real difference since I'm not OCing that much at all?

I would always run RAM at its rated speed or above. 1:1 gives very little benefit anymore (particularly with intel)

So far it seems stable.. 3hrs of prime and no errors or BSODs. Although I am curious about something.. Running prime my core voltage was at 1.30ish but when I stop prime it's at 1.33 should I back it down some or is it ok?

I also start with a NB voltage of 1.35 and will increase it if need be... figured I start with the minimum to keep heat down.

If its stable and your temps are ok I would leave it alone. You could try lowering voltage and see if it continues to be stable. Just keep your settings on hand if it starts having posting problems or BSODs and need to clear your cmos. So far you are doing a good job of learning stuff on your own. Congrats on your overclock.
