Which temp to watch - Core or CPU

I have a x2 4800 brisbane. Which temp do I need to monitor and keep below 55c while overclocking? The Core temps or cpu temp as reported by everest? I've been able to get it to 3.0ghz without upping the cpu volts, when I started upping them then my CPU temp started creeping above 55c, but core temps are lower. So if it's the core temps I need to keep below 55c I still have some headroom.

I would keep both below. Usually, "CPU" is either the case temperature of the heatspreader, or it can also be the average or highest temp of the two cores.

use the cpu if that is higher but i would advise you to use either coretemp or realtemp to get accurate temps

The CPU temp is always higher by a bit. For example if CPU is at 50. The cores are around 25 to 30 (they don't match exactly). I've tried coretemp, but was only able to get it to show the cores and they matched what everest was showing. I didn't see anyplace for it to show the CPU temp. So if I used coretemp and allowed my cores to get close to 55c, my CPU temp would be well over that.

Also, just looked at realtemp, it says it's for Intel processors. Does it work for AMD?
