Heatsink mounting

Ok this is a pretty dumb question but I just want to be safe. Should I put something (foam?) under the motherboard when I'm mounting the heatsink out of the case?

Thats not a dumb question at all. I place my motherboard on top of the foam pad that came with the packaging and then place that ontop of the cardboard box when I work on the board. You have the right idea. Just dont put the board on anything that will produce static like styrofoam or packaging peanuts. They can kill your board.

I usually place my board on a piece of paper.

Wouldn't the pins on the bottom be crushed?
